Well, I decided the best way to discern quality is to do a hands on survey. Just closed deals on 3 pair of boots, a Tony Lama lizard, a Lucchese roper in goat and a Dan Post lizard. All look to be in great shape and negotiated real good pricing. Keeping my eyes open for a decent pair of ostrich but the ones I came across so far are too new and too expensive.
Maybe you picked up one on my list. I have been wanting some black label Lamas, in peanut brittle lizard. It'll be nice to see photos of yours.

The Lamas are a darker chocolate brown lizard and well used but the leather is in great shape. There was a pair of mint peanut brittle Justins but he wants too much for them. The Dan Post's are a darker brown as well. I wear a 10EE

I just picked up two pair of lizard boots. I have used Lexol on my snake skin. Any recommendations for the best to use on these reptile skinned boots? Any opinion on Saphir product for reptile skin?
Can I use a small bit of liquid boot wax on the reptile to colour any nicks in the hide or will the wax damage the skin?

@belfastboy, I use bickmore 4 on my exotics and used it on my lizards when I had a pair. Bickmore and Lexol are very similar products so I don't see any problem using it. The liquid wax, I don't know. I've always used a colored shoe cream on mine, Scout or Meltonian. If you have a discreet spot you could apply it, say a lizard overlay on a pull, might be a good idea to try it there first.

I wouldn't use liquid. Most of it contains alcohol which can dry the leather. I am no expert but have always used meltonian boot cream for nicks and scrapes, very successfully. It comes in many colors and you can mix colors to get the shade you want. I use leather dye from tandys also, since I do leather tooling I always have many colors on hand. I stay away from most waxes also as they can clog the pores in the leather. Just my opinion, others may have better recommendations.

Two votes for Meltonian.....I will pick some up. The local shoe repair guy stocks it

@jonesy86 , here are a couple of books that cover some boot making history as well as some terrific photos of boots.

Also, Jennifer Junes website. She's a bit of an historian on cowboy boots.

I'll back him up on this. Those are all great books.

And could cause you to empty out your wallet with a quickness.

Hey belfastboy

Would love to see some pics of all your boots.

Have a question on sizing for everyone. I wear a size 12 shoe, but usually take a half a size down to a size 11-1/2 in boots. Do you recommend this? or are most boots true to size?
Thanks

I have very limited experience but I am a 10 wide in shoes and Danner style boots. I have two pair of Justins in 10EE and they fit perfectly. I have one other in a 10D and it is a bit tight.

What do all you guys think of these?

http://r.ebay.com/6hA30v

I like the looks of those and I'm a black label fan. Couple things I've learned from buying vintage or second hand boots:
I'm leery of those that have the soles dyed. Difficult to see the wear on the sole and stitching.
Heel wear looks fairly heavy. A true cowboy boot such as those wiil have a leather insole that conforms to the wearers foot over time. If the boots were worn a lot that may make it difficult for them to conform to your foot. Insoles are an option though I personally don't like them.
Price seems a bit steep to me. I think in time you'd find a better deal.

Now thats valuable information! I'm learning all the tricks. I thought the soles looked strange. Now I know. The education of a city boy. Thanks!
