I would prefer facehugger-boots!
Nocona boots from the Justin Outlet Store today.
Cheers! David
Love the color combo on those, David.
Reporting back after my road trip to Paul Bond's--First off I'm really glad I made the trip--had some fun sightseeing/relaxing in addition to visiting Bond's, and didn't mind all the driving in the end.@Stringmaster let us know what you order at PBB . I know there's a lot of choices , it can be mind boggling . Cover the bases . Good luck !

Reporting back after my road trip to Paul Bond's--
I have been away from the computer for sometime now as spring has turned into summer and I am getting busy so have not spent time on the form.Reporting back after my road trip to Paul Bond's--First off I'm really glad I made the trip--had some fun sightseeing/relaxing in addition to visiting Bond's, and didn't mind all the driving in the end.
I got to meet Art, Diana, and Mike--all that knew me by name. Mike actually built the last for my 1st pair 13 years ago! He left for a while and came back part time more recently--he ended up relasting my second pair a couple of years ago (I've never been real happy with the fit on these, while the 1st ones were perfect). He measured me up this trip for my new order and after seeing the fit of the aforementioned second pair he wanted me to leave them so he could relast them again. He's going to personally do the last for my new pair.
My head has been spinning with all of the options--it's my personality to agonize over such things, especially given the expense. I have been collecting pics on my iPad of boots I like--all I knew was that I wanted something kind of vintage looking. I figured when I got to the shop I could look boots there as well as all of the leather samples. My head continued spinning as Mike was measuring me. I really have a preference for tall buckaroo boots, but I've already got 3 pair of them. I've been contemplating a 40's style PeeWee boot too. Unfortunately there wasn't much to look at at the shop in PeeWees. After getting measured I thumbed through my iPad photos with Diana who was working on my order and showed her some of the boots I'd been thinking about. She kind of swayed me to a pair of PeeWee's since I already have tall boots. One of my favorites that I'd been pondering is a pair from Tyler Beard's Cowboy Boot Book (kind of wish there were more pics of them--like a view straight down vs just side views)--she went upstairs asked the bootmaker if he could build them, to which he said yes (they did make it clear that they don't do "replicas" and that there might be some variation). So I had Diana price them out--of course they were over my budget, but I went for it. This is the boot (if anyone knows the maker I'd love to know):
I figured I'd spend hours agonizing over the leather choices. I knew that I wanted brown as I have several pair of black boots already, and I wanted a two tone scheme with a somewhat subtle contrast, and in a darker leather than the pair in the book. She showed me a dark brown calf and I was immediately smitten with it--such a beautiful leather. She then went upstairs and brought down a leather that she recommended for the lighter color--perfect! These are the hides:
I didn't look at the leathers for the inlay colors--just specified that I wanted essentially the same colors--green, red, pale yellow as the boot in the book, and we thought a cream would be best for the collar vs stark white. There going to be 10" tall--which is quite a departure from my 17 inchers, but that's appears to be the norm for a 40's style boot which is what I'm after. Gonna have a fairly narrow square toe, and an 1 3/4" heel that will give an underslung look, but still be comfortable to walk/stand in--which should look similar to the boot in the book. All that stitching on the vamp will likely be done in a couple shades of gold/tan--I didn't specify. Diana asked if I was going to tuck in my pants with them--I said probably not--I'm ok doing it with a tall boot at times, and she said--you should go for it! I'm going to be searching for pics of musicians/cowboys in the 40's wearing PeeWee's with their pants tucked--I know many wore pleated slacks and tucked--but it seems jeans were mostly cuffed--send pics if you got 'em.
It's also my personality to second guess my choice and have some remorse--and I'm going though that a bit now--they're just so different from anything I have, and there are so many other choices that I love--many saved on my iPad!! They are going to relast my other boots first for me to try,--to make sure things are nailed down before beginning on the new ones. I know this is long winded, but it was an exiting trip and I wanted to share. Oh and they rewaxed and cleaned up my work boots while I was there:
And I took this parting shot as I left:
Thanks, and glad your boots are breaking in nicely! My lead time is a little vague. When I talked to Art a while back about visiting this summer he suggested that I put in a deposit to get in the queue, since a couple of big events were coming up where they might get 40-50 orders, so I was able to "jump the line". But as I mentioned they don't want to start on my new boots until the others are relasted and the fit is nailed down--they hope to get those back to me in a month or so--and then it will be a "few months" or so--but I will surely remind them that I had my order in before any mad rush-haha.I have been away from the computer for sometime now as spring has turned into summer and I am getting busy so have not spent time on the form.
Love the choice of the PBB you are having built! I do really like my new PBB boots they are breaking in nice. My PBB are the best fitting boots I have ever had. I like you have looked at ordering another pair and am finding it very difficult to make the choice. I have been leaning towards a pair of lower boots too maybe not 10" but lower in smooth Ostrich, waiting till fall to order anything new. What was the lead time on your new boots?
I don't know what they still attend these days but he is talking about shows like the Denver Stockman's Show, Cheyenne Frontier Days, etc where most better custom bootmakers will often have a booth taking orders. Denver is in Jan & Cheyenne is always late July - early Aug.When I talked to Art a while back about visiting this summer he suggested that I put in a deposit to get in the queue, since a couple of big events were coming up where they might get 40-50 orders...
+1Thanks for the detailed report! Can't wait to follow the progress of these. I'm jealous already...
Art mentioned something in Dallas and the upcoming Prescott Rodeo that happens every 4th of July.I don't know what they still attend these days but he is talking about shows like the Denver Stockman's Show, Cheyenne Frontier Days, etc where most better custom bootmakers will often have a booth taking orders. Recent Goatskin Acquisitions...I'm in love, gentlemen!! I understand these are arguably the top of the line for Lucchese. I'm gullible enough to believe it...
Beautiful boots, NewJack. I have several pair of boots with cording in the shaft and I'm a big fan of the effect. Lucchese "Classics" are their top of the line boots and the only ones still made in the U. S.
This is not a criticism but cautionary advice. Lucchese makes a lot of goat skin boots but a lot of custom makers don't want to use it except for the shaft and inlays because when goat gets scuffed it has a tendency to peel rather than being just scratched or scuffed. Makers like to use it for tops and inlays because of its light weight and it's easy to work with. Very similar to kangaroo but doesn't have the durability and the availability of goat is greater and the cost is much less. For years makers like TL, Justin, Nocona and Lucchese have used goat for the tops and will often be listed as "kid" on the box label.
Again, great looking boots with an incredible shine and I know you "dress" for your work and these will look incredible under suit slacks or jeans, whatever the occasion calls for.

Eel does the same thing. Never buy eel.I notices a pair that did exactly as you mentioned!
Art wanted me to get my order in and a deposit before June as he told me the same thing! I hate to wait as much as anyone but I want to make sure before I place my order. So many choices make it hard, I have always stayed away from fancy boots as work boots seem easier to keep up with. Keep us up to date! Thanks, and glad your boots are breaking in nicely! These will be mostly stage boots--got the work boot thing covered, but of course already plotting another pairArt wanted me to get my order in and a deposit before June as he told me the same thing! Seems we are never satisfied! I love good leather and craftsmanship. Other than getting used to the heal height of my boots the boots are great. These will be mostly stage boots--got the work boot thing covered, but of course already plotting another pair
