Sort of story we'll see much less of in subsequent generations, bearing in mind how few people now get married at 16/18... Jinkies, even if I got married tomorrow, we'd both have to live to be close on 110. Going by family history, I don't expect to see 70.

My folks were married 61 years, both passing within a year of each other. Worst possible estate scenario.

My grandparents were married for 40 years. Grandma and grandpa married in 1943 during WWII. Grandma was born in 1914. Grandpa was born in 1907. Grandpa died in 1983, of cancer. Lung cancer, I believe. He was a smoker. Gran died in 2011, nearly 30 years later.

What a wonderful accomplishment.
I love their sentiment towards each other-
"They would always hold hands and if they were ever apart they would always greet each other with lots of kisses and hugs – they wouldn't care who saw."

Did anyone notice that the lovely couple who passed away within days of each other, and lay side by side in their coffins, in the church, had a tribute played for them by the mourners. They were married in church in 1943, but they couldn't have the church bells peel a celibration ring, because in wartime Britain, the ringing of the church bells was the warning to the nation of an imminent invasion. So at the couple's funeral, the wedding bells were rung. The romance of that, wells me up.

This seems to be something that happens a lot. My Husband's great Grandpa lived to be 99 years old, his Wife (great Grandma) lived to be 96. He died and less than a month later, she passed away. They had been married since the turn of the Century and passed away in the late 1960's. It was said she died of a broken heart. Great Grandpa Frank had worked all up until one week before his death as a part time janitor at the small local high school. Great Grandma was a simple house wife, that still did everything the "old fashioned" way, made bread, cooked pies and would sew most of the clothing they wore, made from patterns she had.

My parents died just nine days apart (after both having been in hospital for a number of weeks in adjacent wards). It is the obviously the worst thing that ever happened to me but I took comfort from the fact that we were able to bury them in a joint funeral in a shared grave.

In many ways I think it was easier to cope with their deaths so close together, since we didn't get a chance to settle down to normality then go through it all again.

It was certainly a life changing experience for all of us.

Indeed, in a roundabout way, their deaths contributed to my starting posting on the FL: A few months after the funeral, I fell ill and was off work for a number of weeks. I have always attributed my illness to the trials and tribulations of that period. Whilst at home recuperating, I had time to start photographing my collection of cravats etc, and it all went from there.

I feel very fortunate that my parents will celebrate 62 years in June. Sadly, with the state of their health making 70 years might not be in the cards, but one can always hope. Whatever happens to have had them both for this long is a treasure and I look at each additional day with them as a gift.
