Man, my attitude has really changed since I posted in this thread back on page 2! Our weather has been so warm here lately - highs in the 70s and 80s, that we aren't feeling Thanksgiving at all. We have not done any shopping or prep work, or watched any of our usual Thanksgiving cooking shows. I just can't get excited about it, and that makes me sad because it is one of our favorite holidays. :(

We're thinking about just going out to eat this year.

Hi

One thing that was entertaining about Thanksgiving one year was when my great aunt and great uncle (not married to each other) argued about faith healing for about 3 hours. Watching 70 year-olds of opposite sexes get in a near fist fight is kind of fun to watch when you're 13.

Probably going to my parent's neighbor's again this year. My parent's have lived in their current house for 50 years, and the other long timers invite the rest of the neighborhood over most years.

This is my boyfriend's first Thanksgiving without his mom. She died 6-months ago and was his best gal. His mom was British and loved to have a party (not a kitchen whiz by any means, but a great hostess if someone else cooked :D ). She'd play record albums and everyone would dance after dinner. He has to work on T-day till 6:30, so we'll brine the turkey on Tuesday night and I'll grill it on Thursday and bake his favorite apple pie (from scratch, thankyouverymuch -). We have her 1963 Packard Bell stereo console now and record albums, so it seems like a good time to spin some vinyl.

My condolences to your boyfriend,Lily. Losing a Mom can certainly be heartbreaking...but he seems mighty blessed having you.

My condolences too Lily and I agree with HD... he's blessed to have you :)

<<Thank you HD and Rue for your kind words, you're good people.>> Brought a bit of a tear to my eye, I must say.

Well, back to our regularly scheduled holiday before I get too "sensitive" here at work... my apple pie tip: if you make the crust yourself, substitute 1/4 cup flour for 1/4 cup finely chopped blanced almonds.

We always have a large get together at our home, anywhere from 15-30 people. Everyone brings something then we play games, watch football, some of the girls plan their "Attack shopping" for Black Friday. I usually wind up sitting on the floor with my great nieces, reading to them til they conk out.

You are making this a very special time for him. You both are very lucky to have each other.:)

A quaint Norman Rockwell type of day for my small family in our 100 yo house  I have not a longing for the days of old that included drunk relatives and
arguing, its quiet with PLENTY of food!. We always watch the Macy's parade as in 2007 when we were living in Alaska, we spent it in NYC and it was grand.

Your words are much appreciated Connery. Good food (and anything sports related on TV) will help keep him and his brother happy. ;)

I remember when your dad died, Shopgirl. Glad to hear you're doing ok. My boyfriend's mom was a waitress well into her 70's (!) and loved a good party, so I'll serve the food, clear the table and enjoy the wine. If the boys leave me a tip, then I'd say we're pretty well set on the spirit! :D

I did my final menu plan and grocery trip today, washed all the special baking/serving dishes and table linens. Tomorrow is pie baking day.

On Sunday we brought home from the church kitchen some chafing trays, and borrowed a couple of utility tables, distributed the menu to the guests, and gave them disposable trays in which to bring their food. Yesterday, Teen Hood and I moved the furniture out of the living room. Today, Mrs. H and our married-almost-one-year daughter arranged the tables, put out the place settings, napkins, glasses, etc. Tomorrow, some early cooking, pick up the turkey, and last minute shopping. Can't wait~

Here's the classic recipe from my mother:

Corn Bread Recipe

1 1/2 cups corn meal
1/2 cup flour
1 Tablespoon Baking powder
1 Teaspoon Salt
1/3 cup oil
1 egg
1 cup milk

Combine dry ingredients in bowl.
Beat egg and milk together and add to oil.
Pour into well greased 8" square pan
Bake at 400 degrees for 25 minutes

This afternoon and this evening, made one last trip to the store for groceries and the turkey , made the corn bread, made another last trip to the store, put together the dressing and refrigerated it for tomorrow, and Mrs. H and Youngest Teen Hood made his apple tart.

With the Big Day tomorrow, posting will be low on the priorities, so Happy Thanksgiving everybody~

A little late, but here are two shots of the Thanksgiving table and the serving table, earlier in day while still prepping the turkey.
