Cost Of A Haircut

When I lived up North (US) I went to go to the same barber shop for about 15 years running. It was the men-only kind of babershop that smelled like a barbershop should, featured numerous circa 1950's seats for waiting and an old black and white TV mounted on a shelf up on on wall. I'd go in, sit down, get a haircut - they always knew how to cut everyone's hair already and would just talk about various things without ever asking what you wanted done. The same guys worked there the entire time too, never anyone new and no one ever left. It used to cost $5, then slowly crept up to $8 over the years, with an additional buck or two tip of course.

Now I live in a different part of the States, so for the last 12 years I've been searching for an old style barbershop of similar character, to no avail. I get my hair cut in a unisex 'salon' located in a strip mall, and it's up to to $16 these days with a two buck tip, and I have to explain the cut ever, single, time, always to someone I have never seen there before.

If finances were more comfortable I'd go to the local membership barber shop. It's men only, and they do all the usual stuff - a little talc on the neck, vacuum the hair off my neck rather than just leaving when it falls down my collar, etc., plus you can get a straight razor shave if you like (ah, nice!), and the decor is superb - very traditional men's barbershop look inside in every small detail. But, at $25 a cut (not including tip) it's a little expensive for me right now. Still, I'm thinking of cutting the bigger luxuries out anyway and keeping the little, and more meaningful ones, like a regular visit to a real barbershop ;)

Free. I went crazy a few months ago and decided to go the DIY route, applying what I had learned after years of observing people cut my hair.

Randy - if you have to go to this mall place, find the haircutter whose work you like the best. Then find out his/her schedule and always go to the same person. I've been using the same woman at a local Supercuts for several years. She knows me, knows how I want my hair cut, knows my daughter, and cuts her hair whenever she visits.

Thanks for the tip! I have actually tried that, but the staff tend to come and go regularly. There was one lady who did a great job, but she too has moved on, sadly...

DIY also ...

In my youth my hair was really long & I wore it in a pony tail most of the time or my girlfriend would braid it for me... I use to go to Village Cutters every month for the back of the neck cleanup & sideburns & facial hair trim, as I got older I developed the dreaded monkey butt on the top of my head. So after a while I decided to get it all chopped off, like all of my male friends did [most of them had long hair too] ... then it was once every 2 weeks to maintain a neat look & I also started wearing lids on a regular basis. I'm Asian & I have really straight hair so it has to be a certain length for it to fall correctly, about 3 inch minimum any shorter & it would spike. Two years ago I bought a Remington Titanium Barber Kit and buzz my whole head every month @ zero cost ... when I frequented Village Cutters it would be $20 + gratuity for a wash, cut & facial trim monthly.

$25

Hey Fats, I pay $25 + tip as well in the City. Probably the same person, too.

I'm going to be in LA in the summer, and I'm on the look-out for a good joint. I've heard that Hawleywoods is great, but they're kinda out there (Long Beach & Costa Mesa).

If you're in S. Florida there is a barber near the Sawgrass Mall and another on University Drive in Sunrise.

it's usually like 5 bucks + tip for me
I go to a "hair academy" school type deal
So far, no complaints whatsoever, and if they mess it up, then I can spend the big bucks.

My favourite shop is just around the corner from my house.

Twenty-Five Dollars for a Ducktail haircut. Plus, he's the only one around that can do it properly. Actually, I'm heading there right now.

Clipper cut

I used to go to Fantastic Sam's now and again, but about 6 or so years ago I bought a well made electric clipper set. I was at Sears around the Christmas season and they had a couple of different sets made by Wahl which has been making them for a long time. I spent under $50 for it and since then I will do it myself. I have done a couple of different things. In the summer I will either do a number 4 on top and a number 2 on the sides and back or if really hot just a number 2 all over. I did in the fall let it grow out long on the top and did a 2 or 3 on the sides and back.

As an aside, Wahl is the same company that was making fountain pens as Wahl and later Wahl Eversharp, but they don't make pens anymore.

Hi Billy K,

Good hunting!
My barber in the city charges $19.00

Succotash, I found this website a few months before the
Katrina tradgedy,
http://www.aidangillformen.com/ click the virtual tour
while looking for straight razors and accessories...
(For a short time I entertained the idea of disposing of the disposables,
and using the cost effective, but dangerous straight razor:eek: )
Have you, been there?
How about the rest of you Crescent city cats?
NOW, THAT'S A BARBER SHOP!:eusa_clap :eusa_clap

Cheers!

I did the wahl thing as well.
With all the different clip ons: 1/8 left, 1/4 right etc.etc.
I must have too many bumps and lumps, because I would usually
put a holiday... or two in my cut.

I beg pardon

Inky, Anachronism and other ladies,
I apologize for the wording in the post.
I didn't mean to exclude you, or anyone from reply.
You ladies are more than welcome to reply to anything I
have to say on the FL, I appreciate, and value your perspectives.:eusa_clap
And you ladies who cut men's hair as a profession or pastime please wade in.

Cheers!
Fats
