I also just watched this movie. One of my favorites for many reasons, hats included. In fact, I caught myself thinking, "What would it be like if the movie was filmed with all of the clothing and scenery, but without hats? Would people in the late 20th and early 21st century realize something was missing?"
I think that most would notice that something wasn't right, but I don't know if they would realize right away that it was becuase hats were missing. Thankfully Pollack and O'Rear (costume designers) did an excellent job and stayed true to the era. The heads of the men and the ladies were wonderfully covered.
I just caught the film again on cable myself. The two best fedoras, I believe, were the ones the brothers fished in...a semi-open crown Stetson and what appeared to be maybe an Open Road Brad Pitt wore but styled somewhat like an Aussie hat.
I love that movei. Bought it on DVD as soon as it hit DVD. It is very believable in it's portrayal of the past and the clothes they wore. I loved it all, especially the hats worn by their father.
SinatraStyle I agree, there are so many things to like about the movie. I liked the grey fedora, that the old fella playing cards was wearing. It only flashed up about twice, but what a hat.
It's a lovely little story, for sure. My then-girlfriend and I read it aloud to each other shortly after it was published. It remains among my fondest memories of our time together.
It's a real quick read. If you're looking for a pleasant way to pass a couple of hours, I recommend picking up a copy at your local used-book dealer.
