Cordovan leather jackets - what do you really think?

I have 3 jackets in cordovan/ox-blood/burgundy of different weights and styles - it is the most versatile colour for a leather jacket imo, and can be dressed ip or down easily depending on the style of the jacket, and also works with black, brown, blue etc in the rest of the ensemble. The Thedi below is my latest addition and this is also made extra versatile by the detachable brown and black mouton collars - this one is midweight HH and among the top 2-3 favourites of my jackets, and the other two (Aero FQHH CXL and Barbour x Simmons Bilt Steerhide) plug the heavyweight and superheavyweight (Barbour) gaps….these three together cover pretty much all the bases and seasons for me and they all

This article covering the different colors of actual shell cordovan leather was an interesting read. Apparently, according to this article, Horween Color #8 is the darkest of a series of red-browns, with #2 being lighter and more red, and #8 being darkest and most brown, and is "often referred to as" cordovan" (the color) - - which is apparently very close to the color of the shell cordovan leather historically produced in Cordova, Spain. .

The article doesn't mention that these colors may be used to dye different types of hides, though, but as we all know that to be the case. If Heddels is accurate, it makes me wonder whether what some of Aero has used in jackets and sold as "cordovan" (the color) wasn't actually Color #2, #4, or #6, rather than #8. My guess is that the lighter colors just use a different proportion of the colored dyes they mix to create them.

(Color #2, Color #4, Color #6, Color #8. Who do we appreciate?)

They are all nice, but the picture that is the most striking to me is this one

Gunmetal and Garnet also look very good, but that is another conversation :)

This Aero Halfbelt is an awesome jacket. If I were to ever get a Cordovan jacket, I would try for something similar. It's a great look. I wonder though if anyone else thinks Cordovan is a young man's color?

My first big money leather was my Aero Bootlegger, bought new in 2010. Still got it. At the time going for cordovan over brown or black seemed like an indulgence, but in practice I've found that - just as with oxblood shoes - it really is the universal colour. I've worn it with earthtones and brown leather boots and shoes, and with blacks. It goes best with blacks (second to other oxblood, obvs), but certainly works perfectly well with browns. If I had to have just one leather jacket and wanted it to be as "flexible" as possible, that's the colour I'd go. Interestingly, the crossover Bootlegger (basically a 50s halfbelt with a crossover front, pattern wise, though I had mine made with button cuffs rather than the 'engineer cuffs' it has as standard) I have often found to be almost more flexible than a straight-zip halfbelt, but I think that's more subjective. This is of course a big part of what brought me over to this sort of jacket rather than exclusively MC styles way back when, as I very much enjoy a vintage casual look with a leather jacket over a collar and tie. Plague-times aside, jeans are an irregularly worn, weekend-at-home sort of thing for me mostly. I'm far from anti-denim, but it's not central to my wardrobe either.

I have a Cordovan FQHH Teamster Jacket from Aeroleather. I really love it, it s super versatile.
The color depth is amazing, depending on the light, the color changes from black to purple to red or brown...love it !

My Aero Maxwell in tumbled cordovan goes well with most things. Once worn in, it looked nicely un-precious; I still think Aero's brown HH is their best colour when new or broken in and cordovan looks best after a bit of wear.
