This jacket has been done to the point of cliche elsewhere, but still cool
I was lucky enough to spend a fair amount of time in the presence of Paul Newman, and I can verify that no one looked cooler or more put together in person, ever.
Can't drop something like that without giving us more. Was it work or pleasure? " in the presence of" sounds like your contact was limited. Do tell.
A number of years ago it was Redford's jacket in 'The Natural' that started me thinking about a vintage style jacket. A few minutes on the internet and I realised that I had not come up with a cool original idea. This jacket is replicated by at least two manufacturers. Fortunately, soon after I bought an Aero off eBay without really knowing much about it. Then I started to lurk here and have bought a few jackets but none lifted from a film.I don't recall Redford's jacket coming up here before: I like it. It may be because I'm older but I really appreciate the looser fit in leather jackets.
OK, I'm biased, but this is my Grandpa in Montana at his copper mine. He gets my vote amongst all the truly cool cats here...
It was limited contact, a few brief conversations at social gatherings, plays, wedding, out for drinks... While my wife was studying for her Doctorate, a bench-mate of hers started dating Mr. Newman and Ms. Woodward's adopted son, who had met Ms. Woodward through her interest in dance, and at the time he was a prodigy with Alvin Ailey. They took him in and he became a member of the family. This young woman who was dating him (now a top neonatologist) was and is totally ignorant of pop culture, which made her a perfect fit for movie screening nights at the Newman's Westport estate. She would come back to the lab the next day, having met very famous athletes, movie stars, etc... with no idea who any of them were, just their first names and it was a game in my wife's lab to try to identify them.
When her eventual husband started directing off-Broadway shows, we would invariably attend shows on the same night that the Newmans were in attendance. He usually had on Khakis, blue blazer and button down shirt, but no matter what, he exuded this regal air, but it was effortless, smooth, cool, but at the same time leaving you thinking that he might still be able to kick your ass if he needed to... One play he brought Tom Cruise with him, and introduced him to my wife as "The Cruiser." We all went for beers after the show and "The Cruiser" kept staying for one more even though he was supposed to be leaving to pick up his then wife Nicole. They were separated soon afterwards.
The final time I saw the Newmans was at this couple's wedding, which was held at Mr. Newman's camp (Hole in the Wall Gang Camp) for kids battling cancer, where this couple both worked during the summers. (All the food was provided by Newman's Own Foods) During the ceremony, Mr. Newman stood up on a chair to get a better picture, and EVERY guest stopped looking at the bride and groom and just watched him. I've never seen eyes the same color before or since. They were an ice blue color, and while you can see that on the screen, they were all the more striking in person. I was dancing with my wife to an upbeat song during the reception, and someone slammed into the back of me, their dancing having gotten a little too energetic for the crowded floor. I turned to give them a dirty look only to see that it was Joanne Woodward, and she was still flying around the floor bumping into every one... I decided to just give her some more space.
We are still very good friends with this couple, and I hear the occasional Paul story when we are out to dinner, or sitting in the hallway of a chess tournament together. We both relocated to PA from CT and our oldest sons are the same age and play competitive chess in the same tournament circuit.
