Nah, side vents have been seen on (some) Savile Row suits since the '30s, and they've never left. Prince Charles's double-breasted suits have 'em.


In the '80s, Georgio Armani all but killed side vents in America. Double-breasted suits from the '80s and '90s rarely had any vents at all. At that time, only anglophiles (such as Ralph Lauren and Alan Flusser) stubbornly insisted on making double-breasted suits with side vents.


Around the year 2000, side vents became popular again. Practically all the double-breasted suits made today have them. Luckily, it's easy for tailors to close them up.

I had to look for and request ventless double breasted suits in the 80s. They were not that common where I am. [huh]

Naah, it says "two pockets on each side in front".

As for Charles's tie, that looks pretty much how a four in hand would normally turn out, doesn't it? Who wants perfection in the tie knot? Not I!

There is no standardisation as far as I can observe. 'Hacking' denotes casual or sport riding in the UK and isn't subject to the same 'rules' as is more formal riding. Two of the best makers of hacking jackets are Magee and Mears. One specialises in double (side) vents, one in single. Phillips and Piper does both.

Perhaps I dislike the four in hand because it doesn't come out even like that. The guy is a windsor. He should tie one.
The knot is too small for the collar spacing--that and I hate seeing beyond the knot in the collar space. In the picture you can see the flat part coming out of the knot.
Straighten that tie!
