Marlowe fans may not know that Raymond Chandler, creator of the famous sleuth, never lived for more than one year at any location in Los Angeles.

I've been reading the Marlowe books out loud to my family... and I have to say Chandler was more then just a mystery writer. The man was a prophet. The social and political commentary he sneeked in there is just as true today.

Although the journey started from less than auspicious circumstances, layoffs gave me the opportunity to follow in the footseps of Hemingway's characters in The Sun Also Rises.

Oh, that's a great journey! I'm sure our very own Mr. Hemingway Jones would love to re-create the journey's of Hemingway himself, although I don't know how I feel about any of my good friends running with the bulls!
I have eaten at Harry's in Venice and drank Bellini's there too, just like Hemingway. That's as close as I've come to walking in the footsteps of a great author.

it looks like a neat book. Has anyone ever tried to "tail" an author's references and journeys?

Some years back, my girlfriend at the time and I were were so taken with the book (and TV mini-series) "Come In Spinner" that we went into Sydney and toured the landmarks mentioned in the novel, such as the Children's Court at Surry Hills.

"Come In Spinner" was written just after WW2 by two women, Dymphna Cusack and Florence James, and revolves around the fortunes of 3 women during the war.

Having read a couple of Chandler's classics I was very interested in seeing his locations. I've never been to LA, aside from the airport, but my impression is that Central Avenue certainly has changed a lot over 70 years, and Santa Monica is not out of town any more, as it is in his books. I get the impression that Hollywood went from seedy to glamourous, back to seedy in those years. Sounds like a great book!
