I stopped buying Converse a few years ago after they last changed hands, now owned by a company to which I do not care to give money. That said, I still appreciate their style. The Jack Purcell is a nice shoe, and has a long pedigree. BTW, it was originally a PF Flyer design, not a Converse. Converse owned PF Flyer also at a time, but when the competition regulator got antsy about their dominance of the training shoe market in the early Seventies, they chose to sell off the PF Flyer brand, retaining the Purcell model which was later reissued under the auspices of the Converse brand.

What is the company`s name,I will not do business with them if they are a company that uses child labor or anything under handed.PS they will go in the trash if you are that passionate about giving them your money!

OK,here are just a few companies that use child labor for picking Uzbek cotton,LL Bean,A&F,Kohls,Pier 1,Walmart,Hanes,thats just 6!So don`t give you money to LLbean,Kohls,Hanes,or any of the others and I am sure the list is larger. So next time you go to put your LLBean gum boots on,remember their policy!!!

I don't know that the FL is the appropriate place to go into this, as technically it is political (if not party politics). Nike are good capitalists, and will go the extra mile to keep prices down and profit margins up. Unfortunately, they have been implicated in many practices over the years that are not something I find acceptable - child labour, also paying their employees extremely poorly while making a large profit. It is not always easy to avoid companies exploiting their workforce (wherever that may be in the world - it's certainly not limited to authoritarian states or third world countries), but where I can I prefer to stick to those who I know will treat their workers fairly. When next it comes time for me to buy training shoes (likely some years away yet, as I rarely wear them any more), I'll be looking into PF Flyer (now owned by New Balance, who have an excellent ethical reputation), or one of the Chuck Taylor style options from Ethletic: http://www.thefaircorp.com/range/footwear

I love Purcells, have a plain white pair and an all white ostrich skin pair (probably printed/embossed pattern-but they look interesting). Go great with most outfits and are a design classic. Good enough for Jimmy Dean.

Can't say I knew about the Nike-Converse link, but I'm an Insurance Broker so I'm pretty morally corrupt anyway...

I'm a lawyer/banker so share Aether's moral void, at least as far as gym shoes.

Personal failing aside, (and, forum posters who itch to slam my shortcomings, please rest easy knowing Mrs. Foster bears your burden and does your work for you), what again is the difference between the Purcells and Taylors? They look about the same to me.

Purcell: http://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lh6vavmbTP1qboegz.jpg

Chuck: http://t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRqtrebQ24VTeJTBjT6Qg46XageOlGIGXxv7qq2jAXN3a0SkXu6BEL9fJI2

The Jack Purcell was named after a 1930's Badminton player and is a low cut plimsole type shoe - the original was, I believe, white with the light blue sole and 'smiley face' on the toe. Interestingly, Purcell later pursued a career as a stock broker...

The Chuck Taylor was named after a Basketball player also from the 1930's, and is the classic canvas 'All Star' hi-top that most people associate with Converse.

Hope that helps.

The first link does not provide a photo but I get what you are saying. I prefer the low cut Chucks, in black, myself. They are comfortable and look suitably Bohemian with jeans or shorts.

I grew up wearing Jacks and Chucks. Jacks only came in white while Chucks came in black and white, high top and low cut. I like the aesthetics but they pale in comparison to today's athletic footwear in terms of performance. I wonder what would happen to the millions of workers if those sweat shops closed up.

People who make blanket condemnatory posturing statements about things like child labor display a view of the world that is frankly just plain unrealistic. They also have a tendency to insert such statements in discussions then complain that anyone one who disagrees is being confrontational or political.
