Ancient history? Congratulations, Doran! Ancient history interests me as well, although I may pursue either a more general history degree, or archaeology and classics. I would have went to Berkeley myself, but apparently, my application was rejected outright for "not being on time." It was submitted before the deadline...

TD -- Next time we hang out we simply must get uproariously drunk . . . in that sense it will be business as usual . . . but somewhere along the line we will toast your stubbornness . . . er . . . academic determination and I will certainly owe you a few celebratory rounds.

Thanks, all!
The dissertation that I wrote is entitled "Demographic Fluctuation and Institutional Response in Sparta." It concerns the causes and effects of the population crisis in Sparta from the fifth to the early second centuries BC. It gives a new analysis of the seventh-century BC Spartan poet Tyrtaios/Tyrtaeus, emphasizes the Lykourgan reforms of the 8th (?) century as highly eugenically motivated, gives an argument to push the timing of the reforms in Sparta backward a bit, gives a new explanation for the efflorescence of Spartan imperialism after the Peloponnesian War (the war Thoukydides narrated, O Hungary Tom), gives a new explanation for the acceptance of the Peace of Antalkidas of 387 BC, and analyzes the Spartan reformers of the Hellenistic period (Agis IV, Kleomenes III, and Nabis) in terms of their adherence to the eugenic regime attached to the myth-historical founder of the Spartan system, "Lykourgos" (or Lycurgus).
Also, I can make a good Manhattan.

Doran,

Well done and congratulations! Writing a dissertation and defending it do not come easy.

(Now on to the fun stuff getting that academic job and revising the dissertation for a publisher ;) )
