Oh my, quite the experience today, I set my hair last night and only wore a little sun dress, some red lippy and my glasses. It must have left quite the impression with the local school boys as I heard, "Slag!!" etc echoing from their side of the road.

Ah well.

Aww, Thank you, Magnolia. :) (I still don't know if I want to be told I look like a teenager though when I'm thirty... LOL )

Sacred, I bet you looked adorable. Whether on this side of the pond or yours, school boys are all the same. We all know what they're like. Obnoxious and irritating, the lot of them. I would call them chattering little monkeys, but that would be disrespectful to the monkeys.

Last week I got:
"What a FIGURE!" by a total stranger. And I was wearing high-waisted skirt.

..then again, I do get a lot of "Your mouth is red" (as a sort of an.. insult?), to what I reply "..and you are not color-blind" :D
You do have a fabulous figure.
But your previous compliment would only have currency, if it was given given without any sort of ulterior agenda attached to it.
my wife's lips are permanently red, they have been cosmetically tattooed.

A little boy in my daughters class commented on my lipstick today saying, "wow! Your lips are beautiful. I like red." Of course, I don't know how much faith to place in this boy as he's recently pulled me aside to tell me that my "boobies are nice" *facepalm* Starting EARLY, that one.

:eek:fftopic: I had quite the little run in with someone first inside and then outside of a pub yesterday. The reason I'm sharing is because the fact that I was dressed very vintage and "put together" saved me from being punched in the face.

My partner and I were walking to a pub to meet some friends, a little way before there was a man begging on the floor. Neither of us had any change on us so we just kept walking. A man in front of us turned to the man and informed him that, "Maybe he should try and get a job instead of pestering others!" Now, the next part I'm really not proud of, it was just a gut reaction. I called out, "What an ***hole thing to say to someone!" He was all like, "What?" "What you just said is a horrible and demeaning thing to say!"

We all walked on. Later on in the pub I got up to help someone carry another round and the very same gentleman was stood at the bar. He tapped me on the shoulder (Guys, don't do this, it's very scary while you're surrounded by drunk people) and asked, "What did you say to me out there earlier?!"

Me: I thought what you said to that man was incredibly rude.
Him: What would you say to him?
Me: Nothing, it's none of my business.
Him: So, you don't think he should have gotten a job?
Me: Sure, but it's not that easy and you don't know his circumstances. My own father lived as a squatter and on the streets for quite a while and he now has his own, very lucrative business, so maybe you struck a nerve!

H turned away at this point, as I went to go I called out to him again to say, "Look, please have a lovely evening anyway, I didn't mean to ruin it. I just hope that next time you maybe think twice about saying something like that."

This is where I think the vintage portion comes in as he turned, gave me a sarcastic smile as I think he thought I was trying to make fun of him and after a pause just said, "You're very pretty, aren't you?" I just said, "Thank you, I think," and walked off.

I think he as trying to imply that if I wasn't "so pretty" he wouldn't have let me get away with that.

But ah well, my question to you, ladies, do you ever feel like in dire situations dressing vintage may have saved you from either verbal or physical abuse? As my partner said, "He saw you, registered lady and thus didn't dare to be more directly rude to you."

I hope this wasn't too off topic!

You've got the point here.
In my case, wearing the clothes the way I do stopped many from calling me "girl", and made them refer to me as "madam". :D

I get comments all the time, mostly because I always dress á la 1930s or 1940s, but since I've reached the age of reason (= old enough to lie about my age) the comments are all positive. I've adopted the hausfrau frump look, since I don't think I could pull off a pin-up or movie star thing, so most people either ignore me (which is ideal) or remark about how I remind them of something (normally, not something flattering, i.e., their grandmother had shoes just like that. You know the type of thing.)

Anyway, the best compliment I ever received occurred just after the Fourth of July, when I had a bunch of house guests staying here. Before I continue I should say that my house is entirely furnished & set up like a late-1930s bungalow (it was built in 1929) and even my sleepwear & bathrobes are made from 1930s sewing patterns. So, long story a little longer. In the middle of one night I got up to get a glass of water (house guests have a way of wearing me out & wrecking my ability to sleep through the night) when one of my guests, with similar intentions, came into the kitchen and nearly jumped out of his skin. He literally leaped into the air and came down clutching his heart. He told me that he thought I was a 1930s ghost, evidently a revenant of one of the original owners.

I have never been so flattered in my entire life.

At a business lunch the other day, an eldery gentleman (I’ll mention here he was Italian) told me "You are SO pale" - and showed me his colegue, an Italian lady with, as they call it olive skin tan. "Nothing like her".
Me? I thanked him.. (what? I like my tan.. or should I say - the lack of tan) :D

Just went to the grocery store with pin curls under a scarf. Lots of, "Look at her!" and small children being pulled out of my way.

That's hilarious to me because it happens to me all the time when I run to the grocery store after I set my hair. I get lots of stares and people looking away quickly. They act like they've never see a woman with set hair before...

I don't know about that. Liverpool is famous for girls going for entire Satrurday shopping trips in town with their hair set in huge curlers for their night out. It's not classy I'm afraid as the look is accompaied by Uggs, an orange tan and foot long fake eyelashes.
