Comments You Get When You Dress Vintage

Well, as the weather has been (intermittently) nicer 'round these parts (I'm far too lazy to dress pretty in the winter...), my skirts and dresses have come out to play recently. And all of a sudden, my co-workers have been telling me how beautiful I look! Now mind you, it's all been pretty subtle, nothing I would consider "haute vintage" or really all that vintage at all... mostly just simple skirts or dresses with a modern blazer, nude fishnets, and china flats (my arthritis has been way too mad at me lately for me to wear anything with a heel) - little to no makeup, and my hair in my usual patented "unruly ferret perched on my head" bun. I wonder what they'll think when I start wearing the REALLY ostentatious pieces...

The other day, I was wearing such an outfit and a co-worker said "what are you all dressed up for?" Now, it's important to note that my place of employment has recently suffered a rash of well-intentioned but poorly-thought-out "Theme Days," so it would be easy for someone to see me and think they missed a memo...

(Though our mob-themed day for the big push for the last season of The Sopranos WAS admittedly a lot of fun. It was a blast to see management-types outside smoking cigars on their lunch breaks and running meetings as though they were a mob family, and our HBO rep in the break room dealing blackjack...)

When I stopped for coffee a few days ago I overheard a conversation between 2 mature women that involved me.The line was a bit long,so I was standing near the table and one of them said
"Well, isn't that little redhead cute?" to which the other replied"I think it's refreshing to see a girl in her 20s dressed so ladylike!"
Since,the conversation was private I didn't reply.
Not only do I love being told I'm cute I adore the fact that they thought I was 20 something since I'm 37.

The other day at Ralph's while I was buying eggs, a worker passed by me and did a triple take! He kept looking at me like he wanted to say something, then kept turning away, so I just stared back and smiled!

Finally, he said to me, "You know you have one of those classic looks, right?" He seemed totally confused, as if he didn't know if I was doing this on purpose. I just smiled and said thanks.

The weird part is, I was wearing jeans, keds, and a vintage beaded cardigan. Not very vintage at all, really casual. I had my hair curled and lipstick on, but wasn't very vintageafied at all. I notice I get a TON more compliments when I'm more casually dressed rather than all decked out in a dress, stockings, heels, etc. In those cases I get more compliments from friends and classmates, but hardly any from strangers. It's the complete opposite when I'm dressed a bit more "normal", but still vintage.

Does anyone else get that?

Hahaha, I get that all the time, PT... I thought it was just a fluke or something!

Now I go to class dressed in vintage between 2 and 4 times a week, depending. So my classmates all know that I dress that way and do my hair, etc, and some kids I don't know very well only know me by this look. But a few days ago I was really lazy  and just went to class in a shirt, sweater, jeans and sandals, with my hair au naturale. In my eyes, I was as far from being vintage as I could possibly be-- but in my second class, this kid says to me "So I saw you walking to class, and the first thing that came to mind was 'She looks like an old movie star or something like that.'" And I got two other such comments throughout the day!

I guess that after gals like us get used to the vintage style, carriage, and demeanor, that we just have an air of it about us no matter what we wear!

Wow, I joined and posted a few times about a month ago, and then I had a lapse! We have been moving, which, since I am sort of a packrat  , is pretty much an all-consuming activity! I have dressed vintage (hair, clothes, and make-up) for a few years now, but lately, I have gotten up the courage to go full-on with gloves and hats every day. In the past, I have gotten nothing but nice comments from everyone. I still get mostly positive comments, but the one comment that I have started to hear over and over is "What are you dressed up for?" Apparently, I have no control over my facial expressions, because no matter what my answer sounds like in my head, I always get a response like "I didn't mean to offend you!" According to my husband (biased, since he tends to bring it out in me!) my "annoyed face" is the one that I sport most of the time. I have to admit, I do sometimes feel myself making it when people make negative comments right in front of me, but otherwise, I consider myself to be a pretty nice person! :D

Back on topic... Most of the time people will tell me they love my hair or that my dress is really pretty. But they say it with appreciation in their voice.
