well spotted. i haven't seen any vintage wide waistband, button-over flap pocket jeans turn up on US ebay, have you ?

When I think of pants like these, I always recall this SEP cover by Leyendecker from 1937:

Mine from the late 20s. 22 inches at the cuff and a half inch wider at the knee. Technically "bags" but not extremely so.

Not quite, friend. Most collegiates will be a half inch narrower at the knee, if not a straight drop. It creates a radically different silhouette.

I'd say they do. Remember, 22" bottoms are going to look voluminous paired with a US size 7 or 8 shoe!

Also, sturdier material will let the fabric hold a stronger shape; notice how stiff the cuffs look on the guys in the front row.

The flare effect (as illustrated) is really only discernible when the pants are in motion, still photography does not do it justice.

I almost bought a pair in 36w but it did not have the side or rear buckles button fly though

I might go back & buy the non belted those were 10 3/8'' wide

the belted was 32W I think
