When I stated college in 1974, my Dad gave me a navy blue, three-piece suit and a gray, three-piece suit, along with a pair of black and a pair of brown wingtip shoes. His instructions still ring clear to me today: "Remember to wear the black shoes with the navy suit and the brown shoes with the gray suit."

I don't remember ever having occasion to wear either suit while in college, but I did always dress neatly (slacks, and a shirt with a collar). Of course the slacks were most likely polyester and the shirt rayon - it was the '70's, you know. [huh]

Cool thread! I don't think I've posted in it yet... unfortunately, the majority of my peers sport the "sweatpants/basketball shorts & sandals" look, which I find grotesque. I've even seen people walk into class in their pajama bottoms... yeesh. At the same time, I've gotten weird looks myself if I wear a shirt/tie sportcoat; therefore, I generally stick to vintage sportswear and more causal stuff. I especially like to wear sweaters to class.

Here's an example (yes, my school's main initial is a "P!".... I don't remember if I posted this in the "what are you wearing" thread, but it's relevant here even if I had...)

Nice spear point collar shirt! Do you know of a good source for them?

I ask because I recently got my first ever collar bar, which I love, but the only spear point collar shirt I have is one of my dad's and it's way too baggy for me. I've had a hard time finding any.

Hi

I've seen the whole PJ's out in public thing, and if I go back to college I plan on embracing it at least on a few days a week. I sleep in running shorts and a t-shirt, so I'll have to go shopping, but I think nice Navy pajama set with a Navy smoking jacket and matching slippers would be great. Maybe a thermos of really good coffee with that.

Cheers! Luxire made it for me; it's 5" long and I'm very happy with it.

@1961MJS: When I say people walk around in their pajama bottoms, I mean, like, flannel baggy pants with prints of the Coors logo all over them. A navy pajama set is undoubtedly nicer (perhaps even more formal than the jeans/t-shirt look that's common among college students, especially if it's worn with a smoking jacket). But I personally don't think it's the best thing to wear in public. I personally wouldn't feel decent walking around like that, but that's just me. ;)
