Just got this new Mil-Spec G-1, size 42R. It is larger through the waist than my first one, also a 42R. By about 2+ inches.
I contacted Jacky, and she says their patterns have not changed. Whatever, it does not have the "glove like" fit that my previous G-1 had.
Note the collar is a different shade also, this one being more of a reddish hue.
Note how the jacket hangs, with the new one being a bit wider overall, front and back (same hanger).

It is not hyper obvious, but even these photos show a slimmer waist. I tried to replicate all pictures, to have them uniform for a good comparison.

And here are the exact measurements for the current jacket, accurate to with 1/4".

I like the older one too. Better color in the collar for sure. And a much better fit. A 40R is on it's way here, so will have a good chance to try both sizes on for fit. One jacket will go back.

I know this is rather cold to say, but there seems to be issues between the sales folks and the production people of these entry/mid-tier companies regarding production variances. I don't say this definitively so it's best I shut up, but I once sent back a Gibson and Barnes A-2 due to the fact the newer one seemed like a completely different build. I just don't think these guys are as nuanced to details like many of us here are. It's well within their right to not take the passion to that level, but still, it is a potential gamble ordering two of the same jackets made during different times.

The first G-1 (Mil-Spec Navy 42R) had a classic fit. Perfect, but perhaps a tad small. But it was very flattering to my average build, 5' 11", 170-175 lbs.

The new one is not flattering at all, being larger through the waist. My size/shape has not changed, so it's not me!

Again, the folks at Cockpit swear nothing has changed, same make and pattern. But I am here to tell you different!

Here is one big difference...when the first one was ordered, the Cockpit website and fit guide said this was a "Military style" jacket, and trim fitting. Now the same jacket has this comment..."Normal fit, order your regular size."

Go figure.

And here are the measurements from my original Cockpit Navy G-1. Note the main difference is in the waist:

I think you really hit the nail on the head here Nick. I had this very same experience when I ordered my first A2 from G&B. After reading many posts here about how oversized there A2’s were I called the company to inquire as it seemed to me that I might have ordered a size too large We reviewed my measurements and the lady I spoke with assured me that I should stick with the size 46T I had ordered. When the jacket arrived of course it was at least two sizes too big and much longer than I needed.
I think that the sales people at these companies are used to dealing with a clientele who is less worried about getting an accurate trim fit and more worried about buying a jacket that is too small. That leads them to err on the side of too big, since they are much less likely to have unhappy customers returning jackets this way.
TXFlyGuy,
Interesting post and I really like your illustration detailing the measurements of both jackets. It’s too bad this info isn’t posted on the website for all to see before they order.

Dealing with sales reps at these companies is one thing, but my contact has been with the owner. She has always been very nice and helpful in the past.
However, when I mentioned both issues with this jacket, being a terrible chemical odor, and the waist being too large, she acted very surprised, saying this has never happened before.
The odor was very strong initially, enough that my entire closet stunk. It has abated now, and should be completely gone in a couple weeks.
But she was emphatic stating their patterns and sizes have not changed. Never. But the odd thing is she could not get me detailed sizing/measurements for the jacket. You would think the owner would have that info at their fingertips, if not locked away in the back of their brain.

Getting to the advice given by sales reps, every time they assisted in the size selection and the following purchase, the jacket was too large. From G&B, USWings, and Cockpit. They all seemed to harbor a major fear of the jacket actually being on the small side, so they err on the large side. Guess they think that the purchaser will just wear it, and not really know the difference. That was the case with me. Buying jackets on their advice, and they were a bit large, and I kept them. Not terribly oversized, just not the correct "trim" fit that we are all shooting for. Little did I know then.

Now my purchase is much more carefully made, knowing exactly what to look for in the size department. This involves being prepared to return the items from time to time. I have actually bought two jackets at once, trying them on, then keeping the one that fit, and returning the one that was too big. FedEx likes me!
