In theory, I certainly know you're right, Smithy, but I've tried -- oh, how I've tried -- and the results have been nothing less than alarming.

Come on guys, give the clip on the respect they truly deserve, especially the ones that squirt water or spin around or light up. Now that's class.

The low cut, fullback vest I want to get The Husband (for his tuxedo) comes with a pretied bow tie, and I've bookmarked a cummerbund that comes with a self tie bowtie because I would like him to have the individuality that comes with a self tie. But have the pretied waiting in the wings just in case! lol

The Clip-on ....Ugh

As a committed bowtie wearer when someone says" Is that a clip-on?" :eusa_doh: i say no "I tie it myself" and I show them my famous parlor trick and untie and tie the bowtie sans mirror. Quite easy and its not perfect like the clip on ... so infernally perfect looking. There is no wasabi effect like a proper bowtie.

Help with a box of old BOWTIES Found

Hi,
I was at the thrift store this weekend and I found a large box of OLD bowties. They all could use a cleaning, which I am trying to figure out how. But regardless of that, I am trying to figure out what era these are from.

Can any of you guys please help?

Each one of the metal backs says PAT PENDING. I am guessing, 1930's? 40's? Possible 50's?

Can someone please help?

Thank you very much for any and ALL information!!

CLIP-ONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! EEK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Back! Back! Back, I say!

For those of you who do not wear bows:

A gentleman does not wear clip-on ties and he does not admit to knowing anyone who does.

My guess would be that these were worn by someone who belonged to either the Lions or the Jaycees or both. He listened to Mantovani. He most likely sold used cars.

And the arm holes of his suits were very, very low.

Well, no one claiming to be a gentleman would ever wear a ready made--much less clip-on--bowtie, but that Cardinal and Gold one looks intriguing!

We all know that guys wore clips back then, ha!lol

I only paid $1 for all of them, I just couldnt pass them up just for curiousity's sake.

Being that you OWN clip-ons, I don't know if I should be talking to you or not. A quick look at Wikipedia reveals that: The clip-on tie was reportedly invented on December 13, 1928 in Clinton, Iowa. I believe it was the cause of the Great Depression.

Totally 50's!

Those are so 1950's it's painful. Reminds me of old Dave Garroway, the first host of the Today Program, circa 1951. But even he wore a tied tie.

Ties with little doodads like that lasted into the early 60's, but really are more emblamatic of the 50's. Bow ties were very big for a while in the late 40's and especially in the very early 50's.

Actually, I have never worn a bow tie. A few months ago, I purchased a couple made in ENGLAND that are Hand tie. They are vintage, and nice colors. Like I was stating, I bought these just for curiosity sake, a buck for some history and something to snicker at.

Was it Les Nessman from WKRP in Cincinnati........ wasnt he a Clip on Bow tie wearer as well

And probably wore short-sleeve "dress" shirts (in quotes because everyone knows that there is NO such thing as a short-sleeve dress shirt), and black socks with sandals & shorts during warm weather...

As has been said, they're likely 50's.

Honestly, I'd not hesitate to clip on a ready-tied tie if it looked smart. I have a green one with a novelty pattern that I love that would sit in the drawer if I held to such a rule. To each his own I suppose.

The more "I'd NEVER do that!" rules you have, the duller you are apt to be. ;)

I think being a gentleman is all about behaviour and conduct.

"The forbearing use of power does not only form a touchstone, but the manner in which an individual enjoys certain advantages over others is a test of a true gentleman.

The power which the strong have over the weak, the employer over the employed, the educated over the unlettered, the experienced over the confiding, even the clever over the silly — the forbearing or inoffensive use of all this power or authority, or a total abstinence from it when the case admits it, will show the gentleman in a plain light.

The gentleman does not needlessly and unnecessarily remind an offender of a wrong he may have committed against him. He can not only forgive, he can forget; and he strives for that nobleness of self and mildness of character which impart sufficient strength to let the past be but the past. A true man of honor feels humbled himself when he cannot help humbling others."

I don't wear clip-ons -- no judgment, but I just don't think they look nearly as good as hand-tied ones. It's frustrating, though, because I often love the material used to make them. I wish I could find hand-ties I liked as much.
