To answer a dancers question... something for then balboa and shag crowd: Many modern remakes of vintage shoes have little arch support. Many custom orthotics can make it hard to dance because they don’t flex, and most off the shelf arch supports tend to fill up a shoe. These new profoot supports give a good out-flair arch support which I’ve found many men’s shoes from the past have built in, and have a great mesh which lets your foot slide right in. They make them for the ladies too. Check them out.

How are they with shock absorption? I have gel insoles I have to wear in a lot of my shoes, which are an awful tight fit, but these look like they’d leave much more room.

I'm don't quite understand your point. Dance shoes, that's shoes designed for dancing, should never be worn in the street because the thin leather soles have been specially treated to give an easy slide on the ballroom floor. Dance shoes look like street shoes until you turn them upside down, you then see a matt finish to the leather. Worn in the street they would soften and perish within minutes. Dance shoes are quite expensive, to keep costs down I own just a few pairs, but where possible I will wear street & dance shoes that match, only dancers would know that I have changed once at the venue.

I think Matt is referring not to dance shoes, but to using regular, street shoes to dance in (which is my preference - I can't be bothered with changing shoes to dance. I only own one pair of dance shoes because I bought them by accident on eBay and I've never gotten around to selling them! Never used them).
