Classic Safari vehicles!

I own a non running 1972 Toyota Landcruiser FJ40. Just have not had the time to turn wrenches on it, been in the garage taunting me for 5 years!!! Wife is starting to gripe! I want to put a little turbo diesel in it and clean it up a bit. I got the vehicle, with the original motor in it, a newer fuel injected motor and a 4 speed tranny ( 3 speed is the stocker in it now), all for $500!! Can't let it go!

I just recently acquired this at an auction. Until I can hang in on a safari vehicle I'll just hang it in the guest room.

While in the Marines, we used to all buy these at PX when we did ops at 29 Palms. We'd hang them off our haver sacks. I dunno what I did with my old one. I think it got thrown away....

If you have an original 1972 FJ40, my advice would be to keep it in original condition (trim, colour, engine ect).
This certainly will keep value of your truck if you intent to sell it in future.

This '64 IIA was my daily driver for 10 years, but after I blew my back up I found it harder and harder to work on it (and it's always in need of work) so I passed it on to someone who could give it the attention it needs.

It's a Toyota Landcruiser, series 70... Operated in Kenya by Cottars Safaris.

The body was built by an Indian who lives in Uganda if my info is correct.

I've known this car from pictures, and from discussions with friends who have a mechanical workshop and grew up in Nairobi. But now that I see the clear broadside pictures posted above by Dinerman, I start questioning the Landcruiser lineage: the position of the radiator is too far back in relation to the front axle for a 70 series, which is what I had understood the base to be from what I was told.

I'll inquire further and get the full story.

Definitely a classic! Any idea what it is?

As I said the other day, I went to look for more information, and was lucky enough to find more than I had hoped. It's a Toyota Landcruiser HZJ75. The front axle has been moved forward. Radiator grill and bonnet are hand-made in-house. The fenders are from... a Rolls Royce! The body was built in Nairobi by a Sikh and a British guy, and the car is now owned and operated by Cottars Safari in Kenya.

Now, the interesting thing is that the man who built it moved to Uganda, and in my quest I found out that he lives just down the road! We spent time chatting about classic cars this morning, and I got to see the photo album of the car's birth. I was also introduced to some incredible pieces of history on wheels, awaiting restoration in a dusty tropical warehouse. Priceless!

We were in Harare National Park sitting at a water hole feeding the greedy little hornbills and looking with trepidation at some truly huge crocodiles when a UniMog very similar to that Lander drove up and parked next to us. The chap driving said that they had put it on a ship in . . . Homburg, I think, and picked it up in Capetown. They were going to drive it home. Now that UniMog is a stout vehicle but driving the length of Africa? I'd have wanted twin .30 cal's in a turret on top!

I don't know about the Civilian ones. But I rode shotgun in a ex-Swiss Mil-spec Unimog one time. Very ackward. Your bum is below your knees about level with your feet. Some mechanism or some such is located under the passenger foot well so that there really isn't a passenger foot well.

According to federal and California law, a hand-cranked weapon is not a machine gun and is therefore perfectly legal for private ownership. Normally this refers to Gatlings but I will have to do some more research onto this little gem.
