circa 1938 believe it or not

The George Raft bio has anecdotes of pre-fame George (when he drove shotgun for Owney Madden) sporting the look in the 1920s. This pic is obviously later on, probably 30s. At the height of his career Raft was THE fashion icon for young men and I wouldn't doubt if the hep cat in the photo was emulating him.

And just for the heck of it, my own take on Raft.

Some broken rules look good (like dark shirt and light tie) and some don´t (for me), like shorts with jackets. As for the shorts (again and again) - I wouldn´t mind too much wearing them around our weekend house, but in urban surroundings of Prague? No no no.

Maybe there's some weird correlation between light ties and shorts.
It's about the sartorial restrictions that one arbitrarily places upon himself.

Aside from swim trunks and track wear, I haven't worn shorts since I was about ten.
For a hipster, you got a lot of fogey in you, Jack. ;)

The notion that shorts belong on boys and not men is a very European notion, one that I share.

Born that way. When I was lad, my mother couldn't understand what I had against sandals either, and why I cried when she tried to get me to wear them. 'But they're for the beach,' she exclaimed. Nope. Wasn't having any part of it.
That sounds like me when I was a child. I wouldn't buy a word of it. I didn't like shorts either. Maybe if I had seen some pictures of Bogie wearing shorts on his yacht I'd have felt different. And maybe if we could've afforded a yacht...

Love the look. Especially with the hair, makes me think of Sean penn in that movie wher he played a jazz guitarist. Great white suits.

Speaking of white suits, one of my favorite looks was a double breasted white suit with black shirt and light tie. It was very popular in Hollywood in the thirties. You can often see it in photos of not just movie stars, but various cameramen directors producers etc.

This guy's look makes me think of French Zazous, with the trim but slightly edwardian jacket, or maybe a ted. I wonder if the look was only developed in europe after the war, or more likely, it had already started earlier.

Love the plaid pants. Are they tapered, or slightly flared at the cuff?

Am I crazy, or do you look a lot like George Raft?
