The difference is that those people came out here looking for opportunity through hard work. The hippies came out here looking for a handout and free love.:eusa_doh:

Here in Southern Ohio the people looking for a handout aren't hippies--more along the lines of rural redneck. I get the impression that for most of the people around here their greatest ambition is to get on Social Security Disability.

To meander slightly back on topic, for some reason a chimney sweep stopped in at a campus I support while I was there. He was wearing an old homburg rather than a top hat, if I recall correctly. We wound up talking hats for a bit. We do have a fireplace here at home, but my wife had it converted to a gas fireplace before we were married.

Rue, I grew up in South Gate, California, and now that my father has died no one I knew growing up still lives there.

Cheers,
Tom

I'll just keep sending them. You'll get your share of hippies---don't worry.:p

I was lucky that my wife found the chimney guy while getting gas. The guys did and do a great job. The former one I had wanted me to clean the fireplace of all the ashes before he got in and cleaned it. Uh, duh, you are cleaning it---what difference does it make if you clean a little more ash and soot?! :eusa_doh::mad:

Hi Tom :)

South Gate? Do you remember the commercial that had a dot bouncing along with the words for a car commercial (I think)? I tried looking it up, but can't find it ... ugh. Edited to say.... Ack! Found it!

Replace New York City with Gas fireplace. Get a rope!;):p
No one puts gas in my fireplaces unless they happen to pass gas as they pass by it. :eusa_doh:

One thing I did learn from the chimney sweep is if you look in your fireplace and the soot is shiny you would do well to get it cleaned. This is a glaze and it may catch fire.
