Chesterfield for a tuxedo

I am looking for a proper chesterfield coat to be worn this winter with my tuxedo.

I am aware that a herringbone chesterfield is the preferred coat, but I am wondering if a single tone gray with black collar would also be acceptable...

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

A navy blue or dark grey with velvet collar is better for a toxedo. I have a navy blue chesterfield with a velvet collar from Pakeman, and I like it very much. It seems from the web site that they only do a plain collar this season, but you can always ask them, usually they're very flexible.

Who told you this? Rubbish. A charcoal grey, navy or black chesterfield is much more "evening" than herringbone. A chesterfield is formal by definition; if you're going to have only one, don't make it herringbone.

Save some serious cash: buy a dark wool overcoat. (Single-breasted with a fly-front is the most traditional for your purposes.) Then, go to really fine fabric shop and pick up some black cotton velvet with a dense, thin nap. Take it to a tailor and ask him or her to set it into your overcoat's collar. Come back in a week, and you'll have your chesterfield.

Generally, off-the-rack chesterfields cost a good deal more than their velvet-less cousins. Why not add the velvet yourself?
