It is hat weather in Romania. Teodor Meleşcanu, the Romanian Defence Minister, is sporting a rather fine fedora in this picture. I'm surprised it didn't blow away!

I love the caps on the military guys on the left!

Aside from the obvious (that fedora is a sweet lid, no two ways about it :fedora: ), I'm rather liking the blue combination cap on the military guy on the right! This picture has something for just about everybody. :)

I'd daresay that it is either a Tonak or a Borsalino.

The caps on the soldiers are of a newer type. The older type had more of a peak. I think they're trying to emulate the US style BDU cap (obviously the older woodland camo type, not the new type).

I'm willing to guess it's a Borsalino as well.

Unless my eyes are playing tricks on me, doesn't the ribbon bow have some good lettering on it?

I can't say I know too much about hats, but I don't know of many other hat makers other than Borsalino that does that.

Elegant

Matei,

The hat suits him well, he is really elegant in the ensemble. It is contrasting to see the hatless besides him and shows why hats are simply better.....
By the way aren't there any good hatters left in Bucharest?
It would be surprising if there weren't. Before WW2 there must have been thousands working there.
Artisanship in Romania was (is) still existent, my grandma accounted it was common to have tailors, hatters, shoemakers, etc. in the in Oradea during the pre-war era. Maybe it is coming back now?
St. Crispins (shoemakers) is working in Romania producing a very good quality as I heard. Maybe some biz guys will do the same with hat making one day if it did not happen already.

Skilled artisans are more common in 'Eastern Europe' and work for much less, but turn out a handmade quality...if they get the right raw materials nobody can tell from where the products are....
It is the artisanship quality the only market niche where indigenous companies can concur with the cheap mass ware
Maybe the Minister is patronizing one of the custom hats, who knows.

Tamas

Good eye - it is indeed the British camo pattern. I don't know if it is still the case, but in the last few years the MoD had outsourced uniform production to Romania.

HungaryTom - You're absolutely right about the quality of handiwork of the Eastern European artisans. If you look at the labels from a lot of the high street shops, you'll see that there are loads of clothes made in Eastern Europe.

I'm not sure if there are any active hatters still in Romania. There were, once upon a time.

There is some craftsmanship still alive, but it is sadly dying out. We always try to support our local tailor, shoemakers etc...

I think in Ardeal there are probably more people keeping these arts alive.
