Cheap but not hideous denim jacket suggestions

I'd like to find a new unlined denim jacket in an indigo black/blue for around $100. Not too short - say a 26-27 inch back in a size large.

Not keen on the look of the Prison Blues stuff and their blue is too light for my taste.

Any ideas? I've looked at Dikies, Wrangler, Levis.

This Wrangler is close but it looks like it could fall to bits. There must be a company who does decent versions for a reasonable sum?

I'd hit the weekly sales compendium at Heddels andsee what shows up.

There are three denim jackets in last week's:

• Dickie's 1922 Trucker Jacket, which looks more like an A-2. In XL only, so it'll probably be too big.
• Levi's Vintage Clothing Type III in Bedford Cotton.
• Naked & Famous Featherweight Denim Jacket, but it might not suit your aesthetic.

If you wait for three weeks then we'll be into the January sales, and you might find something there.

I suspect that if you want something decent you'll have to go up a price point or three. The Railcar Deuce is $250, the 3Sixteen Type 3s is $265, and the Iron Heart version of the Wrangler is $400!

Okayama Denim might be worth a look, as some of the Japan Blue jackets start at $130.

Seb try selvedgestyle forum. Look up Indigogene on "other brands" section. They are a new mob, but are churning out decent stuff. I think they copy what you want. Also, cianofarmer who is on there is doing denim jackets. Unsure of price point, but certainly not in the crazy IH or Japanese brands realm. It might be worth a look.

Seb, thanks very much for starting this thread. I've been looking all over for the same jacket but, seeing some of the prices, had decided to just keep checking ebay and etsy.
BTW, this could be the progenitor for a whole series of "Cheap but not Hideous" threads: jackets, boots, significant others, etc.

I agree Bob. I've been keen on a type 2 or 3 for while. I'm a size 48-50 so a lot of the fashion labels really don't cater. I wouldn't spend Iron Heart cash on one, but a XXXL in IH is a big 44, or trim( please don't shrink at all) 46. A good suggestion for a thread on solid,but not over priced gear. I will throw Sou West chunkies in straight away. Beautiful handmade custom sized jumpers( gernseys?) from Cornwall using English wool. I bought 2 for me, and one for dad. They do lovely stuff. Peter is the owner/ operator. He doesn't even charge you until you have recieved it and are happy with it. Pretty amazing way of doing business in this day and age. He is a tremendous guy, and great to deal with.

Keep an eye on the bay for Polo or rrl denim jackets. Ones similar to what you want show up frequently at decent prices. Picked one up, though blanket lined for $120 earlier this year. It was NOS.

I hope I'm not following a certain line of reasoning here. I lost a lot of weight about ten years ago, and just before I was going to throw out a nice wool sweater I decided to throw it in the washing machine and the drier. I wound up with a great little sweater for a hand-puppet.

Interesting thoughts from people - I really appreciate well made affordable items more than anything else. I really resent having to pay a lot for ordinary working clothes. Sure I can afford premium prices but I really resent them. I won't for instance spend over $100 on boots.

I agree with you to a certain level Seb. I'm the complete opposite re boots. I hate cheap shoes. have a 13EE foot. I had bought boots half a size too small for years at the shopping centre as nothing seems to come in larger than a 12 at DJs,Myer etc. I now have a couple of pairs of Whites and Wesco. They fit me like shoes should, and I love them. They cost a bomb, but I love wearing them, and I will get them re- soled again and again. I've got athritis in my toes and ankle from years of rugby, and I had gotten used to ill fitting shoes as a part of life. Never again. Having said that, I also made a promise to myself that I won't be buying another pair of shoes for several years. I can't see value in a $300USD shirt from IH, or even $350USD plus for jeans, the thought of $75-$100USD t shirts make me very uncomfortable.I'm sure they are unbelievable, but there are so many decent options out there for much less. I'm happy to pay big bucks for jackets and boots. Throw in a couple of decent belts and not much else worries me. If I was a size 44 I probably wouldn't bother buying new jackets either. There always seems to be so many great deals on the smaller sizes on EBay etc....

My whole sense of "normal" pricing is now so out of touch after being here for a while. I'm too embarrassed to tell my married mates who are struggling with school fees and house extensions what my jackets etc cost! Life was simpler back then....

It's a funny thing Bob, mine actually shrink on their own around late January every year...I can't work it out. I'm wondering if it's tidal?

Bunyip, I'm a size 14 so I feel your pain. Well, not literally.

Whites or Wescos will take a lot more wear than cheaper boots, and you might well come out ahead over the long term. When I used to wear trainers a lot (Nike Town in London carried big sizes), I'd kill a pair in six to twelve months.

A person's size can sometimes be an issue in this.

I wear Rossi boots these days, they are like Blundstones only Aussie made -$80.00. I'm a size ten so no issues getting them.

I find that $25 old school US cowboy fit Wranglers take care of jeans.

Dikies work pants $30 in black if I have to look neat.

Black Bonds T-shirts $9. They last for years.

Lucky Brand have one in this exact style, in selvedge cone denim. I got one on sale for under $90. It's good quality and the one I got looks better than the one in their pics

Gustin has a wild business model, so you have to be patient. That being said, I have a trucker jacket from them that I absolutely ADORE. Quality matches Filson and the like, but for half the price.
