Hi,

How do you think it compares to Jeff's hat color in the picture above?
Thanks.

It looks like Jeff's avatar picture, but without the brownish tint.

Lighting is tough, as has been shown, the grey tones can pick up ambient tints easily. Bright light can cause a silvering effect that makes them look lighter than they really are.

Yes indeed, a real dilemma. So hard buying online. Much more affordable and more options though. But the people here at the lounge is really helping a lot. Great community!
Are you also looking for something almost black? Or just a "normal" dark grey?
Yes I'm also on the hunt for something grey!...It's just finding the right color grey thats hard...

The photos you found are pretty accurate I guess, the light really plays tricks with this felt, though.

Sorry this is so small

What you are looking at is the hat (left) a piece of black velvet-y material (case from a Nikon camera lens, if you've got one around, top right) and black leather (bottom right, leatherman case).
As you can see in this lighting, it is definitely not as dark as either of the two examples of "black," but it isn't terribly far off, either. I have noticed the sunlight makes it seem even lighter ...
You may just have to find a way to look at one yourself, unfortunately. Any hat shops or anyone on the Lounge live nearby?

Thanks HamletJSD and Carebear. I guess I will just go ahead based on your opinions. You guys have the hat, that's solid enough evidence for me. The pictures can really lie. Thanks for the input. Now is just deciding on the style. The Fed, Fedora and casual all come in the same carbon grey. Probably will be between the Fed and Fedora as the casual seems to have too low of a crown and too short of a brim for my tastes at the moment. But they both come in a open crown. I have read around here that somebody over at hatsdirect bashed the crown before shipping for some customers. Is that just part of the service? By the way, is there a name I should contact, somebody already known to the lounge?

Now on to the second hat. I want a lighter gray fot the second one. I really like the Cruiser Grey of the CEO in the product picture. Akubra has yet another grey fedora who interests me, in what they call a steel grey. it's the Stylemaster. But as we all have learned, the light can completely change the color and I would hate to end up with two similarly colored hats. Has anybody seen the grey CEO or Stylemaster in hands and can give an opinion on its color?

Thanks guys.

P.S. I'm actually already thinking of getting a third hat together with my first 2, and in that case it would surely be a Fed DLX in black.:)
Is this thing contagious? :D

Oh geez thanks ... now I am going to feel guilty when you say "You call this charcoal!!!???" lol
Seriously, though, I thought by the picture of "carbon grey" on Hatsdirect that it would be lighter than it was when I received it. In my own humble opinion, there can't possibly be many shades between this hat and black, but hopefully you don't disagree :)

lol I meant it in a good way. I guess opinions from people who actually have the hat have to be more worthy than a misleading internet picture.;)
I'm pretty sure it will be dark enough. If not, oh well, I just need to look for a darker hat and will have another nice hat with a different shade of grey for variety. No harm done!:)

If it really is as dark grey as you hope, let us know. I was considering a Reg Fed, just in any colour other than brown, so I might well go for a grey one.

Remember to post pics if/when you get it.

I know the title of this thread refers to the color of the hat but I have this image of some guy with his tailgate grill and some lighter fluid dousing an Akubra to roast some brats, sausages, not children:) .

I am sure it must be in Deuteronomy somewhere that I read about how your post would be a violation of the "sanctity of hats."

There are some pictures here of Chewbacca Jones' Akubra Federations in black, brown, and gray:

Dark gray fedora

Take a look at the Banjo Patterson Akubra fedora. I had a BJ in charcoal and it was a very dark gray, almost black. It is a step up from the Federation which I also own, and has a nicer (wider) sweat and the felt is smoother. I am sure that if the brim is too wide you can always have it cut down.

jeboat:) :) :)

Problem with the Banjo is that it looks too much like a cowboy hat. Does it come with an open crown? It would have to be basically completely reworked in order to be a dress hat. The thin leather ribbon would have to go, the brim re-trimmed, the crown re-bashed. Probably easier to buy another hat all together.:)
But thanks for the suggestion.
