Looks nice. More like a medium grey though, but nice. I can't find the swing at hatsdirect though. What's the crown's height?

I want to get 2 hats and I had in mind a medium grey (which the swing seems to be) and a really dark grey or charcoal that looked almost black (Jeff's avatar hat color is dead on). So if I get a grey that is not dark enough I will end up having two similar hats.

I suggest buying one at a time :) - that way you'll get a sense what brim size will work best with your face and can adjust on the second hat if desired.

medium grey (which the swing seems to be)

That could well be - I've not seen Akubra's Graphite Gray. However I recommend not relying on web pictures of single hats alone -- colors and contrast/brightness vary dramatically from site to site. What looks like a light gray may well be mid-gray, for instance.

What we could really use is a color guide - maybe several hats next to each other for comparisons sake.

Talk to Fatwoul about that. He has an experiment he proposed on COW. He may have done it here to before I registered but if not ....

The Hatsdirect "carbon grey" is near black, just so you know ... I was actually looking for something lighter than it turned out to be.

And the "Fedora" (same as David Morgan's "Sydney") has a shorter brim than the Fed. but with a tall crown.

I found some pictures here in the lounge. Maybe the flash is making it look lighter. It looks like medium grey. Do you have one yourself? Could you post an accurate picture? If it's almost black then I'm in.
Here are the pictures I found here in the lounge:

Sometimes it looks more like lighter grey or medium grey:

Sometimes it looks more like darker grey or charcoal:

Hard to tell really
I would guess the outdoor pictures are the more accurate representation.

P.S. Nice hat Atomic. Really fits you well.

Good tip. I’ve been looking around and trying some hats locally already actually. I find that longish brims tend to look better on me. At least 2 3/8. 2” is surely too short and don’t look well on me. A stingy are surely a no no. A 3” would be better than a stingy or 2”.

Yes, that really makes thing harder since I can’t find any Akubras locally that I can handle in person and check the colors. So all I have to go by are the online pictures and people’s opinions.

Thanks. This hats looks nice. Kind of similar to the Akubra fedora.
Akubras that I’m also considering are the Federation (would love the DLX, but only available in brown or black), the Fedora, the CEO, Stylemaster, and even the casual, although it’s already going to much towards a blue bros style, which doesn’t look good on me. That is to be my grey/medium grey hat. I still haven’t found a charcoal option, meaning one that is dark enough.
But honestly, for a beginner, lookin at all these grey hats starts to get pretty confusing and they start looking all the same. Seeing them on heads would probably give a truer idea of model difference.

Retro...I understand your dilema! I'm still working on my next buy and I've decided it should be grey (dark) and it's so difficult finding the right one. It's like a guessing game, unless you can actually walk in somewhere and hold one...feel the merchandise. Or like the stories on here on buy's on OFAS, and saying the pictures looked nothing like it...and boy are they surprised!...and then the sizing worries!...I don't want to even get started on sizing:rage: :D

Here are a couple more photos of the charcoal AB, to show how it can take on the color temperature of the light thats hitting it.

The first is of my daughter, who likes to dress up with my hats and glasses :D. This is with flash, and it pretty accurately shows the color.

The second is under an incandescent light, which gives it a brown tint. Hard to believe it's the same hat, eh?!

Wow! I would have said the second picture was of the brown version (Indy) hat.
But the first picture is exactly the type and darkness of grey I want. Almost black but just not there yet. Have you ever had the grey fed in your hands? How do the color compare to your AB?
Has anybody have both in hands and can give an opinion?

P.S. You have a lovely child. Congrats. She's an angel and looks so smart.

Alas I haven't. My hat collection is rather small by FL standards: the charcoal AB, 3 Akubras in Black, Sand, and Lagoon Blue (the last being a really unique and pretty color), and a black Stetson Gun Club "Royal Flush" (it looks a bit like what Robert Conrad wore in The Wild Wild West).

P.S. You have a lovely child. Congrats. She's an angel and looks so smart.

Thanks, she is a real sweetie :D.

Yes indeed, a real dilemma. So hard buying online. Much more affordable and more options though. But the people here at the lounge is really helping a lot. Great community!
Are you also looking for something almost black? Or just a "normal" dark grey?

That's quite a nice collection.
Your charcoal AB is a really show stopper. I just love it.

Steve Delk's work really is top notch!

Maybe you could try just getting one $100-ish hat from Akubra for now (in a light or mid gray?), and save up for your very own charcoal Adventurebilt? You will not be sorry in the long run - it's built to last a lifetime.

Steve's backordered for several months anyway, so you'd have awhile to save. However don't wait too long, people have indicated over on COW that his prices will have to go up when Indy4 comes out. You might email him and see how "late" you can make payment to reserve a spot before the price goes up.
