There is a conversion process but it isn't easy or anything. A few of my relatives came to it as adults.

But we won't card you if all you wanna do is eat some latkes. lol

My boyfriend actually did that, because he was in the same situation. He's actually the only one in his family who is religious.

For my cousin it was year or so. The other family members, I wasn't born yet. [huh]

I think its different depending on whether you do it Orthodox-ly or not.

Yes... I imagine Orthodox would be more time consuming than a Reform conversion. Of course I imagine something along more messianic lines would take hardly any time at all! However, I don't think that would be accepted by darn near anyone else!

I love the New Mexican Jewish tradition of making "New Mexican" latkes -- that is, latkes with green chile and cheese. Mmmmmm...:D
Those latkes are awesome. Only thing ya can't eat 'em with meat.

This is what Adam Sandler has to say about Chanukah~
chanuka-704039.jpg

"Put on your yarmulke, its time for Chanukah
So much funnaka, to celebrate Chanukah

Chanukah is the festival of lights,
Instead of one day of presents, we have eight crazy nights.

When you feel like the only kid in town without a x-mas tree, heres a list of
People who are Jewish, just like you and me:

Winona Ryder, drinks Manischewitz wine
Then spins a draydle with Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein

Guess who gives and receives, loads of Chanukah toys
The girls from Veruca Salt and all three Beastie Boys

Lenny Kravitz is half Jewish, Courtney Love is half too
Put them together, What a funky bad ass Jew

We got Harvey Keitel, And flash dancer Jennifer Beals
Yasmine Bleeth from Baywatch is Jewish, And yes her boobs are real

Put on your yarmulke, Its time for Chanukah
2 time Ocsar winning Dustin Hoffman celebrates Chanukah

Bob Dylan was born a Jew, Then he wasn't, but now he's back,
Mary Tyler Moore's husband is Jewish, and so is the voice for Scooby Doo.

Guess who got bar-mitzvahed On the PGA tour
No I'm not talking about Tiger Woods, I'm talkin' about Mr. Happy Gilmore.

So many Jews are in the show biz
Bruce Springsteen isn't, but my mother thinks he is.

David Lee Roth lights the Menorrah,
So do James Caan, Kirk Douglas, and the late Dinah Shore-ah

Guess who eats together at the Carnegie Deli,
Bowzer from Sha-Na-Na, and Arthur Fonzerrelli.

Paul Newmans half Jewish; Goldie Hawns half too,
Put them together--what a fine lookin Jew!

You dont need Deck the Halls or Jingle Bell Rock
Cause you can spin the dreidl with Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock!

Put on your Yalmulke, its time for Chanukah,
The owner of the Seattle Super Sonic-ahs celebrates Chanukah.

O.J. Simpson-- not a Jew! But guess who is...hall of famer Rod Carew!

We got Liz Taylor, Ann Landers and her sister Dear Abby,
Harrison fords a quarter jewish--not too shabby!

Some people think that Ebeneezer Scrooge is,
Well, hes not, but guess who is, all Three Stooges.

So many Jews are in show biz--Tom Cruise isnt, but I heard his agent is.

Tell your friend Veronica, its time you celebrate Chanukah
I hope I get a harmonica, on this lovely, lovely Chanukah.

It's not pronounced Ch-nakah, the C is silent in Chanukah
So read your hooked on phonica, Get drunk in Tijuanaka
If you really really wannaka
Have a happy happy happy happy Chanukah!"

MMmmmm, that sounds good. At our house, adding a parsnip was edgy stuff.

I've wondered about that process before.... how long did that take him?

Hmm, I'm not really sure...he converted a few years before I met him. He was still young enough to have a Bar Mitzvah at age 13...yeah, he decided that Judaism was the path for him very early on, and he's very into his faith.

Sadly, his Bar Mitzvah suit is the only tailored suit he has owned! I'm working to remedy that. ;)

I also have a cousin whose husband decided to convert after marrying her.

I always wanted to be Jewish. I only dated Jewish men for a while... I was gutted when I found out that even if I married into the religion, my children wouldn't be jewish. :(

This is actually a concept traced back from the father of Judaism, Abraham. He lived in Ur, an ancient Sumerian city-state. Sumeria was a thriving virtually modern day culture that was already attaining incredible heights 500 years before the great pyramids of Egypt were built! It was a sumerian custom to pass down lineage through the female line instead of the male line.

Happy Hannukah everyone! My last name's Lewi, I come from the Levi-Cohen tribe. We were once the keepers of the Ark! I could care less about all this stuff growing up, but now from a historical and social point of view, I'm completely hooked! :)

Not Jewish myself, but I belong to a Masonic Lodge that is mostly Jewish. So as I say to them, Happy Hanukkah! To you all. ("ya'll," actually).

next year in Jerusalem

I read a cool science fiction novel in which the benevolent aliens made Jerusalem seem to disappear - it would only come back when the various factions got along with each other.

I'm not holding my breath, but wouldn't peace on earth be nice for a change?

Personally I shouldn't like to rely on aliens, benevolent or not!

I agree. I do not put my faith in aliens, or tubers. Policy, you know.

In other news, I put up a "Happy Haunakkah" banner, flashing Menorah and wind up walking dreidle at work. :eusa_clap

I'm not Jewish, but firmly believe in celebrating holidays.

Have you heard about the Mobile Menorah Parades? Have one in your town?
