Chain gang shirts with shooting target painted on back.

Came across these photos of chain gang prisoners from the gritty 1932 film HELL'S HIGHWAY. Cool looking maybe denim shirts with target circles painted or sewn on their backs. Anyone know if they existed for real or just a fantasy? Makes the very powerful unsaid statement that one would be shot in the back if trying to escape. Never seen one before and would make an interesting project for a repro maker. They wear interesting trousers too..
