If you're ever over again and in North Derbyshire (Gods own County) try the Chesterfield Arms a former den of real thieves, cads and scoundrels but now a very nice decent local pub without the sometimes annoying younger drinkers and great ale to boot! also the Derby Tupp on Whittington moor, or if you want to slum it a bit The Royal Oak in the Shambles in Chesterfield town centre one of the oldest pubs in England and a former resting place of the Nighhts Templar.

The problem in the states is that cask is labor intensive (lines need to be cleaned regularly,etc.). Spoilage is a huge problem. I think it would take off but we need some technical innovations to make it work here.

Actually, I think it is more of an education issue. Educated customers to know what it is and to want it, and educated pub owners/managers to figure out how to do what the Brits have been doing for lifetimes.

Yes! We did. That was at the urging of my host. Fantastic! We spent an afternoon in the Posada. My son spent the night out with our hosts neighbor and I have no clue where they went, but he's probably is happier that way! Fantastic beers and people there. Can't wait to go back - which I think will be this late spring/summer!

It was fun to see how seriously (not to the point that it sucked the good out of it) the pub's owners and customers took their beers. It's obviously more a way of life there and not just a place to go and drink as much as you can as fast as you can until you either get sick, start a fight, or both. I really enjoyed the visits and listening to the people beam with pride over their establishments and beers and history. Really a trip back in time for us, and it was lovely. I especially liked being there in the cold where you go inside and warm up with a drink or two. Also refreshing was the pets inside. Some had cats, some dogs, and they just were part of the backdrop.

Agreed my parents ran pubs for years , to them and thousands of other' landlords' looking after 'the lines' is second nature if not done correctly it tastes bad.. if really neglected people will stop using your bar/pub.
All it takes is some decent training, there shouldn't really be that much spoilage if you have a dedicated 'cellar man'.

Oh getting sick and fighting does happen, usually young lads to be fair and most often in town centre 'fun pubs/bars'...your son will have enjoyed his night out 'in the Toon' the girls up there wear one layer less all year round despite it being 2 or 3 degrees cooler on average...my mate lives in Ryton very close to Nexcastle he married a Geordie lass and when we all go up and he brings out all his local Geordie mates and brother in law he sits in the middle and translates (seriously) from broad Derbyshire to Geordie back and forth all night , funny thing is as we drink more we begin to understand better!

Difficult this one AC...I work for the NHS and take note of stats etc all the time but you have to ask in who's interest is the research in?, agreed drinking is a problem here but personally I don't think it's really much worse than it was 27 years ago when I left school...then you were out at 19:30 now they don't go out til 22:00, Initially there was much worry over pubs opening longer but in reality whilst they went to court to get their licences extended many still open/close the old hours.
There is no doubt that more attention is paid now to 'the drinking problem', personally I think it will be tackled in the same way as smoking, ie public awareness, now seeing adverts about dangers, cautionary labels on bottles for pregnant women, age awareness campains to curb under age drinking(shops rarely gets shut down for supplying to under age drinkers though!) then will come an almost drinking is slightly shamefull vibe.

Oh, I'm well aware of the fights that go on...my roommates back in the day were Cricketers and we had our share of barroom brawls in LA pubs lol
We heard you now have the "Girls of Geordie Shore" to match our equally repulsive "Jersey Shore". Man, what a sad statement on humanity! No wonder beer is so important!
My son was telling guests about the near-nude girls in New Castle! They made him talk all night long because of his "American accent" lol
Really cold and he said they wear "tubes" which equates to a thin layer of fabric over (most) of their breasts. And he wore his new Aero B3 there!

Oh glad to see hatred of such tosh is universal still the media continue to produce it and teenagers still watch it, some even think it's really real!, we also have Desperate Scousewives I am told! soon they'll be trying to sell us fresh air , I mean it's hardly original is it?
