Wikipedia says his half-Scottish half-Swiss background is set out in the novel "On Her Majesty's Secret Service", and that Fleming did this in appreciation for Connery's film portrayal, but no citation is given for either point, and I haven't read the book so can't independently confirm.

Connery - fantastic Bond.
Grant - fantastic sartorial style.

"the fact that James Bond, the greatest fictional hero of postwar England, had not a drop of English blood in him. Like his creator, Fleming, and like Connery, Bond was a Scotsman. (The Times obit says his mother was Swiss, but Fleming revealed in an interview that in a later book, never written, she would be discovered to also be a Scot.)"

Personally, I've always felt that the Bond franchise jumped the shark after Thunderball. [huh]

Just to weigh in on this discussion....

Connery learned to dress from the director of the first two Bonds, Terrence Young. Young sent him to all of his Saville Row tailors who put the blue collar Connery in bespoke suits and told him to go home and sleep in them. The idea was to get Connery as comfortable in them as he was sleeping in pajamas.

In fact, many of the Bond traits in the those early films are not Fleming's but Young's who put more of the gloss of 007. Many thought Young was more Bond than Connery was.

Craig. Daniel Craig

Daniel Craig has breathed life into the franchise, a grittier, more human Bond. And I for one actually enjoyed Pierce Brosnan's Bond, more Roger Moore than Sean Connery, but not altogether Moore-ish, he had just enough coolness to overcome the sauveness.

I really need to get another hobby.

Anyway, Craig is in Connery territory in my books, more ripped though, and why not? The movies have never been faithful adaptations of the books.

What about Mr. Craig's sartorial statement? Magnoli has adapted some of the look. Thoughts?

I've read that apparently Cary Grant loved doing Father Goose, because he did get to look disheveled.

I have also read that he loved this movie. It is my favorite of all his movies (check my avatar), he plays against type with kids and has a ball being a roughneck, of course with style.

As far as Bond always liked Connery but am a major fan of Daniel Craig, he has the edge that was lacking with Moore and Brosnan. Moore was flat out a wimp and Brosnan was too smooth. Go Craig go! Plus you have got to love Judy Dench as M!

One problem is the time difference in making a comparison. Most of us here have a "thing" for 1920s-early 1960s fashion and style. Cary Grant was active and very well dressed during almost that entire period (1920s excepting), and while fashions evolved he maintained an excellent sense of style throughout the period.

Connery was only really active in that final 5-10 years of our period and then the late 1960s and 1970s happen and Connery dressed for those eras, more or less. I do agree though that while watching TCM's salute to Connery a few months ago I was struck by how sharp he dressed in the James Bond movies and also "Marnie" and "Woman of Straw."

So while Grant 20 or so years into his career had roles where he dressed like this:

Connery could look like this:

:D I'm sorry guys I had to post that one. Actually, I'm surprised no one else had already posted that photo...

Oops took to long writing this... Tomasso beat me to it...

Let us NOT forget his wearing of the ill-fitting Nehru Jacket...(SHUDDER). I Love Connery though. He's Awesome.

The question I ask myself after getting dressed is,"Would Cary Grant wear what I have on tonite?" If yes, I go out. If no. I put something else on.

Cary Grant was a gentleman. Sean Connery is a hod carrier.

If you want to see the Cary Grant style analysed in some detail look up Cary Grant A Celebration Of Style by Richard Torregrossa with forward by Giorgio Armani and afterward by Michael Kors.

The astonishing thing is that Cary Grant was a self made man. A poor kid from Bristol who ran off with a troupe of acrobats at 14, he built up the Cary Grant look and personality entirely from scratch.

It's an outstanding book for those who enjoy the subject of clothes and style. One key takeaway, anyone who consistently looks that well dressed - all the time and for decades - devotes a large amount of time, money and effort to it. Cary Grant's elegantly nonchalant look did not just happened, he worked hard at developing it, at purchasing his clothes, having them well tailored, etc.. He did not just stumble into being Cary Grant.

I forgot to mention that in recreating himself he started with the name. It was Archie Leach acrobat and stilt walker from Bristol who created Cary Grant. He did a good job.

Yes sir that is me. Thank you very much for the kind words! Great to see you in another format.

I'm trying to build the "Fading Fast" brand. Just kidding - trying to highlight the insanity of how some approach the web.

I just saw no reason to have a different name on each site as I thought there'd probably be some overlap based on the two sites' style.

Hey, I'm just glad anyone reads some of the nonsense I post here and over at the other site.

That's makes perfect sense to me. I was going to approach it the same way and then decided to just use my name on here. Always felt weird to me being called by a username instead of my actual name. I absolutely read what you write. You have been an excellent source of knowledge, advice, and information for me on AAAC and I'm sure will be here as well!
