Cary Grant and Hats

We all revere Cary Grant and his sense of style. He, however, hated hats and rarely wore one. One funny example though was his hat mix-up scene in "The Awful Truth".

While hats are a perfect symbol for the period we all love, they don't look good on everyone!

Ciao,

True. Yet the hat is the one item that captures the essence of the period, isn't it?

That's so true. I can wear a vintage or vintage-cut suit, and people think I'm just dressed up. Ditto for my 40's ties. Spectators just have the squarejohns wondering why I'm wearing golf shoes, and braces with my trousers are simply eccentric.

Put that sky piece on, though, and somehow I've magically just stepped out of a time machine.

Cary Grant was in good company. My Dad didn't wear hats back in the 40's or 50's, either.

I'd have to disagree. Some people look good in any hat. Others just need to find the right hat. ;)

You are soooo right!!!!

P.S. I had to come back and add this.. Douglas is the only one that I know of that looks just as good in a homburg as a fedora.

I agree RBH, Douglas is one of those guys that can seemingly pull off any look hatwise.
Along with this, I wonder if others may actually do so as well. I wonder if part of our perception of how a person "looks" good in a particular style hat is due to the fact that we are simply used to seeing them in one or two particular styles?

Very true. I think this has a lot to do with it.

If you feel comfortable in what you are wearing you will look good, or at least you will think you look good and that is what counts. Thanks for the nod guys but I have seen few here that can't pull off a hat or two.

I always say, ignorance is bliss. ;)

Perhaps the reason Grant looked better without a hat (i think he did) is because the hat was a distraction from his extreme facial beauty. There are few film actors of those days (or any period) who were truly beautiful. Without the chin, his face would be my idea of the male ideal. The hat adds something inorganic to the look, and is ultimately a distraction on someone with a face like Cary Grants.

(This has its parallel in the female world where for some stunning women, they look better without makeup. The makeup is a ditstraction from the natural beauty.)

I think he did not like wearing hats because he had a large head and thick neck (from his days with the Penders). Wearing a hat, he felt, made his head look even bigger. He had the shoulders in his suits made so it did not call attention to his "problems". Geez, if we were all lucky enough to have his "problems."

That is possible but a hatter could use the same techniques to hide the flaws and accentuate the positive as his tailors supposedly did.
Btw, does anyone know Grant's physical stats? Head size, height, neck size, etc.? These can go a long way in supporting the questions that come up about Grant's "special need" clothing.

..anyone??

Come on, someone prove me wrong! All the talk about a Grant having a disproportionate neck/shoulder/head measurements and no one knows the numbers?

I think the talk about Cary's neck is all hooey.

Kneck smeck if you looked like CARY GRANT :D who needs a hat [huh]

Yes. I am trying to establish or dispel the notion that Grant had neck issues that he took special care to compensate for. Unfounded rumors are frequently propagated as fact.
I want to see the numbers or urge anyone not to continue disseminating fiction.
"Just the facts, sir." ;)
