Carhartt Duck Detroit Jacket

Just remembered/realized that I have two more Carhartts hanging on pegs in the garage. I have used these as strictly work coats. One is a tan jacket like the pic at the top of this thread. The other one is a tan longer chore coat. Both must be med tall as they fit me perfectly. I think I bought all three at a Farm & Fleet or similar store. Never had any try on Carhartts fitting with overly long sleeves and super short body length.

That's very unusual. Maybe you had a poorly made dud, a fake or you have a build that is hard to fit?

Could have been a dud, but I ordered directly from the Carhartt website so I doubt it was a fake. I also do have a fit that's a bit harder. I have a long torso and short arms, and I've found most jackets are built for short torsos and long arms.

This really fits you perfectly. Love the Detroit, always been one of my fav styles.

I was reading about Carhartt jackets in general and read somewhere that a lot of their jackets are on the shorter side. Being traditional “work coats” they left room for tool belts, belts, and Sam Browne style belts. So some can come up short but for a reason. But most of us on here I assume are not in construction, policing, or farming/ranching. After jumping on this thread though I now totally want one haha. TFL effect even applies to this!

Perhaps Carhartt makes two types of these jackets with one made more specifically for construction and utility companies only sold in stores that I have never visited. I tried on Carhartt in several ordinary stores before I purchased the three I have now and didn't run across the extra short variety. The size medium regular was borderline in length for body and sleeve for me but not excessively short. The medium tall was a better fit but I could wear the Regular if the Tall hadn't been offered.

And then a Carhartt WIP they call it. For Works in progress which is more a fashion line and collaboration line. Started in I think it said like 2011, probably their attempt to get into the market we are look into. Although oddly enough most of would rather just a standard work version of the original. Which I put on my list now.

I used to visit thrift stores on a 2/3 times weekly basis with my wife who is a collector of 1930's to 50's English china , and until recently I only ever used to look for 36 waist Levi's , 504 and 604 or 501's while she browsed the crockery.
$7 Aussie was the usual jeans purchase price , kept me both clothed and amused haha...

It was a comment from another lounger just recently who had picked up a Cal leather jacket at a thrift in the US that got me thinking maybe I should look at the jackets while there. Now I am thinking just what may I have missed all these years ??

We are having 34C or more for the next week at least , so the Carhartt will be resting in the shade for the next wee while !

I’ve been wearing the Carhartt jackets for years, usually replacing one each year. They all seem sized consistently, and run large. I’m 6’1”, and I wear a Medium Regular. The body length is slightly long, perhaps 28.5” or so, which works well to cover my belt when bending. The sleeves are slightly short on me, averaging about 26.5”, but that minimizes interference with heavy gloves. The shoulders are wide, usually over 20" for a Medium. Great work jacket.

So I grew up on a farm, have worked with all kinds of crops and animals, and work in the Construction equipment industry to this day. I still own a Carhartt coat that was made in USA, but that's hard to find now. Their products are work-oriented, I think a Detroit jacket would be a good addition. But to give an idea of their sizing: I am also 6'1" and 195 lbs. I put on a Large Long Flannel of theirs I bought, and it came almost to my knees. Sleeves nearly to my fingertips. When I return from the Holidays, I'll take some fit photos of it. If you ask for a "tall" from them, you might want to be over 6' 8"!

My take on Carhartt sizing. The sizing varies a lot between patterns. I have tried on numerous styles and I need a small, medium or large depending on the pattern. They are not consistent. But once you find the right size for each pattern they tend to fit pretty well in my experience.

I have also noticed a difference in quality just in the Detroit jackets. Some seem to use a stronger, more rigid cotton duck, that is not distressed or pre-faded. That might be the USA versus imported products.

Carhartt make a lot of styles in a longer 3/4 (30-32 inch) length, the shorter styles I have seen (in a 40 or 42 equivalent) are all 25 to 26 inches long at back. Not especially short, unless you are tall.

I’ve handled plenty and grew up with family members who owned plenty. And I’m not sure they are really so much better than a bunch of other brands. But what you’re paying for is a brand that’s been doing this since the late 1800s. And in the US they are a union factory, and even their non US made products are part of WRAP which is an organization mostly in 3rd world factory areas but also Mexico and China that certifies the facilities as clean, safe, as environmentally friendly as possible, and that the workers are paid decently and given certain amenities. So again are they better than other work jackets....maybe not, but you’re paying for all that comes with the name Carhartt

Carhartt are better than anything we have available in Australia. We have very limited workwear options - about three brands and they do not really make jackets. I like the idea of affordable 'real world' work wear that is actually worn by workers - not just hipsters.

What brands compete with Carhartt - Dickies, Dri Duck... ?

Here's a couple of Carhartts that are twenty years old, The jacket is a size 42 Tall while the Carhartt chore coat is a 40 Tall. Size measurements seemed to fluctuate over the years. My old 42T jacket ( pictured here ) fits more like a size 40T should where my newer 40T on the first page of this thread looks more like a 42T should.....

Found 3 today at my local sporting goods store. All 3 were XL plus tall. I’m a small haha. Even hard to find online. I found one site with some left but didn’t pull the tigger.

I don't know if they are better or not than the offerings from Duluth Trading Co, but I have never been disappointed with the jackets, boots, shirts, bags, etc, I have bought from Duluth throughout the years.

Wouldn't surprise me; much like Dickies, they seem to have two very different marketing strategies for two very different markets: fashion and workwear. Here in London, Carhartt opened a major retail outlet in Covent Garden just a few months ago - selling all at a 'fashion' price. I'm sure that would be mind-boggling to some of their US-based workwear customers.

Not the only brand who work like that: Dickies' UK operation has separate websites for their workwear and fashion wear; indeed, such has been their popularity with skateboarding kids in particular that Dickies Original Fit 874s are now only sold via the "Dickies Life" range in the UK, not workwear.
