Thanks for the encouragement!! I really am starting to see that this is something i need to confront. I am amazed though that there are really bars that offer free/low cost dance instruction! I tell you, there is certainly no such thing here. As far as i know there are only 2 dance schools in this one horse town and they only periodically offer swing/Lindy/jive. I checked online today and neither of them are offering anything this winter. How is DVD instruction, generally?

I've never tried DVDs, although once in a while I'll rip off a move from dancing I see on TV. The problem I think a person might have, though, is figuring out where one's weight should be and how much push or pull to put on the partner.

One suggestion I have is to practice using a full-length mirror. I know it sounds a little vain, but it helps because you feel like you are doing one thing, but you're really doing something else. For example, newbies tend to exaggerate their steps. I've seen ladies sugar step like an old diver with the bends. And many dancers, even experienced ones, tend not to make some moves big enough.

Another suggestion is to videotape your dancing. I've done this and it really did help me see some problems. My instructors said that it will save you months of dance classes.

A Subject Near And Dear To My Heart

I know this is an old thread, but it's an oldie and a goodie.
Dancing is one of my passions in life.
I had the wonderful pleasure of teaching Ballroom, Latin, and Swing for three years at a dance studio. I think more people would dance if it wasn't so expensive to take lessons.

What I have been trying to do is find someone to donate the space so I can charge maybe $5 per person for an hour lesson. The studios around here are charging $12-$18 per person, per hour.

In Ballroom I dance Waltz, Foxtrot, Tango, Bolero, Samba
In the Latin style dances: Merengue, Salsa/Mambo, ChaCha, Rumba
Swing I dance East Coast and West Coast swing.
Others: Hustle, Nightclub Two Step, and Country Two Step

My Lindy is horrible, but I do have a few videos that I need to review.
And my Quickstep is non existant. I need to practice.

If anyone is thinking about learning how to dance, I really do recommend it. It is by far one of the most wonderful things I have ever done.

For me it's simply that I can't keep sitting around when I hear cool music, I simply have to dance!

I've done standard dance lessons including Quickstep, Tango, Chacha, Rumba, Jive, Disco Fox(which is also called Swing for reason I never will understand) and waltz.

But my favourite will always be the jitterbug which I told myself from the 'groovie movie'. The basic steps are very simple, so it's easy to show girls how it works, even if they say they're no good dancers(which is mostly untrue). Me and a friend even did it in the local disco last friday.

Regards,
Henrik

The first job I ever got a regular check for was as a dancer in an outdoor drama.
However, that was in another life.

As soon as the person who has stolen my body relents I'll try to find my feet and attempt to dance once more. Pray for my success.

Never the same feet I came in with

Second lesson last night - basic PBDA - look out, ladies. Thanks for carrying me through so far. Envious of those who have gained the skills. A belated but natural extension of a passion for hot music. Any encouragement welcomed. Thanks, Todi!

Swing dancing is what I love to do, but I'm going to start learning Balboa this month. Dancing is a wonderful way to interact socially with other people and to tend to your exercise regimen at the same time.

Me and both of my left feet love to dance!

Music is such a big part of my life - I cannot help but move when the music begins. Unfortunately I spend many of my younger years in the mosh pit and never had the opportunity to learn how to dance properly.

I can fake it - it looks horrible...but I do not care. I would love be able to do ballroom and swing - I have just never found a willing partner!

I didn't get the chance to do the poll, but I'm the gal who has to hang her feet up in the closet. It's the best activity I've ever found to do. There is nothing like the feeling of a lindy swingout. It's the past + timelessness + pure joy in one. Indescribable. You should all try it if you can.
