Car Coat: Schott 645

I'm looking to buy a car coat in leather but I don't want anything heavy. Johnson Leather in San Fran do a wonderful looking item, but it's 5 pounds. I already have a few good long half-belt leather jackets that are 4.5 pounds and over the years have found them uncomfortable and too heavy.

The Schott 645 looks reasonable and is billed as lightweight. I'm hoping it weighs no more that 4 pounds. Can anyone attest to the quality of this item and it's weight?

I don't have any experience with Schott, but I have been admiring the look of the 645 for some time: I think it is a nicely styled coat. Perhaps you should contact Schott directly to see if they could tell you its weight.

I have 3-4 Schott jackets. Top notch, for the not-custom market.
They have both heavy and light hides. Car coats will be heavier than other jackets due to size, but I wouldn't worry over .5 pounds myself!
Good luck.

It's probably twice the cost, but Lost Worlds does their Downtown in goat. With satin lining it'll be light, flexible, and tough.

The Aero Barnstormer in Goat, or one of Aero's other lnger body coats, would be a good option too, though cost will probably vary a lot between Aero and LW for you depending on against which currency the Aus dollar is currently stronger.

I've wanted to pick up an Aero Cheyenne or Veste de Rallye but Seb what with the Aussie dollar's strength against the US at the moment, I don't think you can go wrong getting the Schott. Beautiful coat and a steal at the moment with the exchange rate. Wouldn't say no to one myself!

Thanks everyone. Helpful. I can afford Lost Worlds or Aero, but even in goat they are too heavy for me at over 5 pounds. Other hides in car coats go to 7 pounds.

Schott tells me this one is 4 pounds - I can do that.

I actually like the idea of a mass produced coat that I don't need to guard with my life; as long as it's well made and Amercan. Schott fits the bill.

Sounds like a good purchase. I agree it would be nice to have a quality coat that one doesn't have to worry about too much if it gets lost, etc. Please do post pictures when it arrives.

After a chat with Alan, I ended up ordering a Johnson Leather car coat in 2.5 oz black leather with flight nylon lining which will come to 3-4 pounds in weight - what I wanted. Happy with that. Be here in 4 weeks. Will let you know when it arrives.

Hi Lucas
I own two Schott car coats, both in brown, one is large the other is medium. I can sell you my large if you want. It's light, I used to wear perfectos, too heavy, but this coat is amazing, 3 pounds the most. I can run in it.
