Maybe you all know about it already but maybe someone does not. Like me.

I am wanting a new life. I want honey to get an old car and us travel around. He can do whatever and I can sell our stuff. Like gypsies.
Sold our home in Texas (for a loss) so hey. Unfettered and wanting to fly.

Not too bad a site for identifying cars, but I've always felt the pictures could be a bit bigger.

So tell me more about this antique-car nomad thing, I'm intrigued. Are you or your loved one mechanically inclined so that you can keep an oldie going as you tour our great nation?

Most definitely. Honey used to be a trained GM mechanic in our early years. He got tired of little old ladies coming in hearing a ping in their 12 year old cars. lol
Extremely mechanical and jack of all trades. Son is a helicopter mechanic and took after dad.
I cannot put up curtain rods without slinging them around the room so someone knew what He was doing when He put us together.
My motto is: Just fix it. lol

I don't want to get political but am thinking along the lines of better do something with what we have left before someone else figures out how to get the rest.
I am a fleamkt junkie and no.9 of 11 children so know how to be poor if need be. I once cooked a pot of beans on a tiny white enamel bathroom heater. I could hold classes. Use what you have on hand. You will be surprised what you can come up with using a bit of imagination.
I think I have the traveling bug as well. A few years back we intensely looked into RV living and life. There is a huge crowd that does this.
I make honey slam on the breaks everytime we come near a vintage car show.
I want either a 1957 Chevy or an aqua convertible with white leather interior.
I envy the owners when I see them all sitting around chatting cars.
Kids are raised. Why not?

My beau and I make a point of taking car trips as much as possible. I'm no where near retirement yet - but I suspect that will be our life someday. Why not? Stuff is just stuff. Adventure, places and people - that's what I want to fill my life with. Do it!

That's a most useful website for quick access to car pictures.

But, beware...some of the earlier cars are mis-identified. The so-called 1923 Buick Coupe, for example, is actually a 1919 or 1920 model having a much lower radiator than the 1923 Buick.

In fairness to the person who put together the website, the differences between cars of this vintage are often quite subtle and hard to detect on a small image.

Perhaps you should write a book, or turn this into a lecture tour. I'm sure there are quite a few who wouldn't mind some tips along these lines. And even if the situation isn't that dire, it would make for interesting reading.

I was actually going to suggest a '55-'57 Chevrolet for this purpose. There is hardly a thing on them you can't buy new, and most of the bits likely to break on the road can be sourced through whatever local auto parts store you have nearest. These cars lend them selves to driving, and if you aren't particular as to body style, they can still be picked up for rather little money.

more tricks

An old toaster with wing doors is a handy travelling tool, assuming there's power in whatever cheap motel you are in, you can take the doors off put it on two bricks and it becomes a stove and a griller, you can also poach fish in a plastic bag in an electric kettle, you can see I never toured with the Stones.......

Might consider changing your life or your car but not both. Is the priority the destination or the passage? Old cars are dirty fuel sops which require a certain amount of infrastructure to keep running. That infrastructure used to be on every corner but the cars are old and the corner gas stations with attending mechanics and selection of plugs and points are gone, replaced by quickie lubes and pay-at-the-pump. Just getting the right tires or a thermostat can make what was once a one-hour stop into a four-day wait for the UPS truck. If you're heading out to destinations unknown, you might want to consider something reliable and supremely practical and for which parts and service are more available along the way. That will give you one less thing to worry about and make it more likely you reach those unknown destinations. Just 0.02.

Good idea - that's a book I'd buy and enjoy. Perhaps you should get a trailer to match and relive 'The Long Long Trailer'.

I don't even believe my life. lol
I always tell my kids coming from a super large family that I have to stay strong. if I don't go first I will have to bury 10 siblings.

trying to currently sell my house and it seems the agents on both sides are fighting. Just one of the million trials i have had and seen in my life. Pray to the Lord, dust yourself off and go on. This time next year it will be a vague memory is my motto...:)

That's a great outlook and I am sure it will serve you well in this and many situations in the past and future. :D

Well, our home is officially sold. This after no kidding giving the other agent 3 pieces of my mind. Seems real estate agents are now sort of like divorce lawyers. :eek:fftopic: They evidently like to keep 2 parties seperate so true story cannot come out.
Due to miscommunication all around the people buying our home showed up toward end and basically we got to sit on the back porch and chat about all the miscommunication on both sides. (after I chewed out their agent and she left) Showed where all the flowers are planted and tidbits on how to do such and such mechanics wise. I can definitely see why people FSBO now.
Very hard to close that door after 15 years of life but looking forward to new adventures.
