Has anyone else been impressed by the attire worn by Captain Hastings? [from Agatha Chrustie's Poirot moider mysteries]

He wears the most fantastic jackets generally, the cut especially the lapels and shoulders are terrific but the leather (great?)coat he has is one I really lust after. It's a sort of great coat I think, Im not sure they have ever shown the whole length in one shot. Huge lapels _ gotta have one one day....;)

Anyone know more about that coat, got any pictures, sources etc? I did ask the ITV but they weren't very helpful at all.

As I mentioned on another thread a while back, you can pick up nice civilian leather overcoats of this type at reasonable prices on German eBay.
www.ebay.de
Search in "Sameln & Seletenes" for "ledermantel".
Boy, I hope by posting this , I don't start another German leather overcoat controversy !;)

In my opinion the style of Captain Hastings' coat owes more to the 1970s than the 1920s.

Just my opinion.

you could very well be right- I don't know - But it's a style I really like!

Don't be discouraged. I don't speak German but bought 2 leather overcoats this way.
You'll find that quite a few German sellers on eBay can communicate in English.
I got excellent service buying one coat from a seller with the title "Magictex". Looking at the eBay page recently, he is still selling these coats. They're very well illustrated and described by him - and he understands and replies in English.
Most of the coats seem to date from the late 1940's, 1950's and possibly even 1960's (the short ones) but are pre-war style with big lapels. Nearly all the ones described by sellers as WW2 officers' coats aren't, they're civilan overcoats. The German military coats were a different style (and would, I believe sell for a heck of a lot more on eBay than these ones do!).
I've got a very long dark brown one (almost ankle length on 5'8" me and from Magictex) and a shorter grey-green one which is ex-DDR Police (this is slightly below knee level). The long brown one has more of the Capt Hastings look, i.e. something he would have kept from his days in the RFC. I wear it in my vintage car !
Good luck !

I always liked it when Hastings exclaimed "My Word !" lol
I wish they still had him in the latest Poirot films.

He was the perfect counterpoint to Poirot;)

Captain Dependable

As Hastings is referd to in the book "Poirot - celebration of the great detective"

ISBN 07522 1046 7

I think he looks good because he's rather tall and slim and clothes always look good on that type of body, he dresses in a rather subdued "British" style. Country house with a city "Twist" I can't imagine Hastings in two tone brogues and a Racoon coat!

I've been watching re-runs of Poirot on TV and, like Foyle's War, I just love this show. Captain Hastings has to be one of the best-dressed gents on the box. I tried to find a picture of his beltback sportscoat but was unsuccessful. I dig his style!
