I'm really lucky. Being as I'm from Yorkshire (pretty much the home of the wool flat cap) we have plenty of tradional custom makers and vendors here. I don't remember ever seeing a good quality flat cap or newsboy sewn down to be honest.

As a Yankee NYC'er who recently discovered the flat cap, I'm asking what's the "proper" way to wear them. Do you pull the brim fairly low onto the forehead, or keep it higher up near the crown? And is it customary to curve/shape the brim on a new hat (like a baseball cap) or keep it pretty straight/flat? Photos would help! Thanks

This to me is a question of style and in such case there are few rules other than to do what suits your fancy. I tend to curl the brim and prefer to wear the cap pulled down low on the brow. It more suits my Irish immigrant persona! But on the other hand I notice wearers of the larger brimmed Cordova and Monsivais caps tend to not curl the brim. In questions of style it is a big world out there.

It depends most people wear these small cap similar to how they wear ball caps. The brims on these caps are similar ball caps so curling them is easy. After Johnny brought out the vintage cap designs I switched to them. The brim on a brim on a vintage cap design is not as narrow so it is hard to curl this style of cap.

I curl mine too, but do what feels comfortable to you.

I'm looking for a leather newsboy or 8 panel cap, but I'd like to get one of some kind of quality. I don't like the caps that have snap studs and cheap baseball cap brims, so I am wondering if anyone knows of a maker who supplies leather hats without those 'features'. Cheap ones abound but none of them well made!

I have one that is well made with nice slightly distressed grained brown leather. It is French seam sewn, satin lined with no brim snap...but cap lays nicely and covers half of the leather 'shapeable' brim. Elastic back will allow med to Xlarge fit. No maker's name but does say made in China. However, it is a quality cap.
$75 plus shipping and it's yours. barely worn.
