after years of tortuous turmoil from ruthless recriminations
i now face with a positive pov
the delicious dilemma:
wide or narrow?

cause i now know
its me
that makes look good
whichever hat
adorns my head

I grew up with 'stingies' in the '60's. Being a glasses wearer all my life (well, practically all my life), I never liked the short brims, as they offered absolutely no protection when it came to snow or rain on my glasses lenses.

I like my wider brim hats, as they DO give me the protection I need, and I wear my hats as a utiiliarian object rather than one of 'fashion'. They keep the sun off my head in summer, and the rain and snow off my head (and glasses) in bad weather.

Stingy brims do not.

I wear both kinds, I favor the wider brims when I'm dressed up and for protection in the summer sun. When the days get cooler and shorter, the stingies come out, especially when I go casual.
This about sums it up for me.....:D

Although you guys might think I own more Stingies than wide Brims....I think my collection is about even. It's just that I'm more of a casual dresser & I think the Stingy fits better with that attire, just my opinion.

Because I'm married to someone with a professional background in graphic design, I've learned to appreciate the importance of scale and balance and how it, too, can play an important role in the way we dress.

Ever notice that even after meticulously choosing a garment for style, color, and fit--something still just doesn't look right when you put it on? There it is...something in the scale (ex. - a too small-styled hat for a large body) or the balance (ex. - a double-breasted suit and cuffless trousers) is off if only just a little bit. There's an old saying in the profession: If the eye can see it, then the eye will measure it. (Don't believe this? Ask an NBA all star how they can routinely hit those three-pointers from near mid-court!)

And, trust me, everyone's eyes are working just as well when asked to check out your new outfit! ;)

I have no problem wearing a stingy one day and a wide the next. Sometimes if I'm wearing a wide and if I watch a 60's movie with good stingies in it I'll wear one the next (or same) day. I guess my viewing (and maybe listening)habits have control over my hat wearing.

This is me also. I have a nice stingy on ebay right now but after watching a few James Bond films from the 60s this week I am hoping it won't sell!

good points. One thing I tried (as my dopey avatar will show, with my stingiest of brims, currently for sale) is forcing my poor wife to take a photo of me in each of my hats at the same sitting, identical pose. If you set up a slide show on your computer you can flip through the images as rapidly as you want and really get a sense of what looks right and wrong.

I even measured my brims and set up the images in order from stingiest to widest, which gave me cutoff points (too narrow/ok/too wide), and I know what I should sell and what to keep.

Not that I'll neccessarily follow my own advice!

I have very few stingies (sub 2") in my collection but notice a difference between wearing a 2" and a 2 1/2"+ brim.
Wearing brimmed hats today is a matter of outlook. A hat worn with confidence will always feel right.

That's a lot of trouble for anyone to go to...but you've done it and now you can see exactly what I mean. Good job!

Ascribing to the theory that one can "wear whatever you want", without regard to the details of scale and balance for one's body size and features, has ruined many a person's overall look--the quality and refinement of the individual garments notwithstanding.

Thanks!

It was a decent amount of trouble - but this is par for the course with my obsessions!:D

I've done it before with various measurements on my suits, coats, etc. It's always illuminating to discover a simple reason why some articles of clothing fit or look better than others - and it (hopefully) makes your future selections better.
