I do not think the candy cigs themselves are an evil instrumentality. However, the cigs combined with me smoking are a very negative example to show my boy

for example:

aww, what a cutie pie. he should keep you young for a while. Savor each precious moment ( and I really, really mean it) when he is growing up. You cannot imagine how fast they grow. Like lightning. Like a dream life whisk them away. :eek:fftopic:

we had 'fags'... which have been renamed 'fads' - the only difference being that 'fads' no longer have red dye on the end to look like they are lit...

but they are still yummy...

and 'big boss cigars' are simply just called 'big boss'... but the picture has changed froma cigar to a stick of dynamite...

perhaps now kids will play terrorist instead of cigar smoker...

what kind of message does that send out? :eusa_doh:

any way I love 'fads' but I don't smoke... nor am I likely to pick up the habit...

One could also consider the way root beer is marketed -- brown long-neck bottles, you drink it out of a mug, rich foamy head. I drank gallons of it growing up, but it never made me want to guzzle down a Schlitz.

I don't think anything would make me want to guzzle a Schlitz Malt Liquor.

My father died from lung cancer with mesothelioma...
The best known cause for mesothelioma is asbestos, not cigarettes. Asbestos was a popular and inexpensive material for insulation, until it was prohibited in many countries when the connection between mesothelioma and asbestos was made. Old buildings with asbestos need to be dealt with care when demolishing or remodeling. The entire room or building has to be sealed off completely, the workers don special suits and masks, and the space sprayed with water constantly to prevent the fibers from drifiting in the air and inhaled.

You neglected to mention that root beer --whose bottle packaging has hardly changed since its invention in the 19th century-- was crafted to appeal to male adults, not children.

"Charles Hires almost named his new concoction 'root tea.' It was, after all, made of tea brewed from roots and herbs. But through a twist of fate, or perhaps just a clever marketing ploy, Hires was persuaded to switch the name to 'root beer' to appeal to the large market of hard-drinking Pennsylvania miners."

I would imagine that any child who picks up a beer because it resembles root beer would immediatly spit it out and never drink beer again. The behavior may be similar, but the experience (and taste) could not be more different. Same with candy cigarettes; blowing powdered sugar through a piece of bubble gum does not prepare one for taking a drag.

If the question is whether these products model smoking and drinking behaviors for children, I suppose the argument could be made for that. But if the question is whether these candies lead directly to use of alcohol and tobacco, I would have to disagree. This is why alcohol manufacturers make drinks which resemble candy (zima), not the other way around.

What about those huge candy rings?? Do they lead to little girls growing up to be gold diggers? That would be truly irresponsible on the part of Mr Wonka and his minions.

My point was lung cancer is not fun. From asbestos or cigarettes. Believe me when I say I am an expert and have been taught by the experts about asbestos.

As I am not the only one on this thread who sees no correlation between candy cigarettes and/or real ones I am not sure why I am being singled out and Marc thinks I would like to be a distributor. I did start this thread a long time ago.
I do understand the dangers of marketing items that look like they are for children for adults.
In my state they just did away with this product because of this.

Like I said the cigarettes were a different time and place. Would I buy some for my grandchildren. No. Did I smoke them. Yes. I also smoked grapevine like I stated. Different time and place. Different everything.

Dude, I'm there. Can I bring my 7 month-old daughter?

Sure. The more the merrier. Is she handy in a fight? Latin blood and all that. She'll learn pretty quick in the East End! (Not that i'm really East End as the term is commonly applied, but i do live on the north-eastern fringe of London). Maybe we'll take her down Edward and Rufus's hgh street and get her a real education.

Alco-pops?

Quite remarkable isn't it? Really a rather impressive piece of marketing. And they really are sweet enough to make your teeth hurt.

They're called alco-pops. They're sweet (you can't taste the alcohol!), brightly coloured, and come in trendily belabelled bottles.

Come on down my high street sometime.

The original target market for alco-pops was women, as they tend to prefer a sweeter drink and not like beers so much. Or so the manufacturers of Two-Dogs et al would have it. I don't know what kids are like nowadays; I know they guys who drank under age back in my day had two key requirements for their alocohol: it had to be cheap, and it had to look like a proper drink, not the children's stuff. White Lightening, Buckfast..... whatever. Taste was not an issue for them, effect and cost were. [huh]

I agree. It is one of the most devastating cancers. I often teamed with the oncologists in our department while I was affiliated with my U hospital for 20 years, so I have seen plenty during my career.

I haven't been able to bring up the original article, so I can't say squat about the original issue.

You're being addressed to because it was you who created the thread.

Then it's apropos that I respond to you as the "self-responsible" creator of this thread's topic.

You say that cigarettes were a different time and place. However, cigarettes are being bought, sold, and smoked today ... and candy cigarettes are still being sold and given to children.

Again I ask: how would you feel if sugar water were put into imitation vodka bottles and sold to kids that way?

here's to you my dear Marc

Here you go. Now little Johnny can be corrupted along with his candy cigaretteslol lol lol lol

Reminds me of those fake wine bottles full of cranberry juice -- my niece used to call it "Kid's Wine," as she cheerfully imbibed. We never thought to pass around candy cigs afterward though.
