My guess would be late 40s to mid 50s. I think that was when those 3/4 length sleeves were popular. We'll see if anyone agrees or not!

Thank you - my first thought was '50s, because of the sleeve length, but then I started to doubt it because jackets tended to be more 'cropped' didn't they? Whereas this is fitted. It doesn't have shoulder pads, and the flare out from the waist is quite short, which is why I didn't think it was 1940s. Also, even though the sleeves look short, and are 3/4 on me, the lady in question was apparently very petite yet curvy - on my friend who is shorter than me, the sleeves were more bracelet length than 3/4.

I love this kind of mystery! Thanks again for your comment.

This lovely halter dress came into my possession some time ago. It's always been too small for me, so I've decided to sell it. I'm trying to figure out if this was homemade in the 50s or if this is a dress made in recent decades in 50s style with perhaps a 50s pattern and even repro fabric.

It has a pocket:

This dress has some imperfections and a sort of unfinished look to the inside seams that look home-made. Pinking shears were used for dressmaking in the 50s and now, and there is this uneven stitching that doesn't affect the actual construction that looks unprofessional.

Lined and boned bodice. No tags, but it does have little hanger loops sewn in.

It has a Talon zipper, but the zipper chart for Talon shows this is a mid-30s zipper. Which really doesn't mean much, I have zippers in my sewing supplies right now that are 20 years old.

So. Those of you who really know your home-sewn fifties, do you think this is vintage or vintage-look?

Difficult to say what is the real year

It undoubtedly looks 1950s

It can be or it can not be

That's all I can say

Short of putting the dress under radiation rays....you know
