Can anyone date this by the clothes???/

A back lot shot from either Frankenstein (1931) OR SON OF FRANKENSTEIN (1939) judging by the clothes...any ideas????

From the lady's hat, I'd guess 1939. I wonder if comparing the monster's make up might yield results.

Due to WebSense here at work I can not see the picture. If the monster has sunken areas around his mouth the phot is dated to Frankenstien. If the area around the 'monster's" mouth is fuller than it is from Son of Frankenstien.

Something about the lady's hairstyle and makeup says 1931 to me. It must've been hot that day -- Frankie has taken off his sport coat!

The lady's hat looks early 30s to me... in the early 30s, most women's hats were short brim and shallow such as hers.

I'm going to say this is from '31.

I can't tell from the clothes but that doesn't look like Karloff. Maybe Glenn Strange?

First off, GREAT SHOT! Where'd you find it!?

I could be mistaken, but a few issues here...

Prior to the '31 Frankenstein, Karloff was a starving actor. It was easy for James Whale to pick him out of a commissary lunch table because he already resembled a corpse! But afterward he was well fed and livin' the life. And you can see it plain as day in his face. By the time of Bride of Frankenstein he looked so healthy that Jack Pierce had to try to hide it so it didn't seem too jarring a difference from film to film. In Son of Frankenstein several years later, this issue of being well fed, healthy and successful was only more of an issue.

Also another big difference from the '31, '35, '39 films is the make up. In the first film, the head piece was built up with cotton and make up while subsequent films Jack Piece had a prosthetic piece made so less time had to be spent in the make up chair (or maybe it was first used in Son of come to think of it... my Frankenstein info is a bit rusty.) Regardless, you're looking at that headpiece in this picture!

And finally, in my mind the dead giveaway (pun intended!) are those lace up pants were strictly used in the '39 film!

Karlov wore a dental bridge. For Frankenstien, he removed the bridge to give the sunken look. Since the Creature spoke in Bride and Son he wore his bridge thus filling out his face. I keep forgeting to look at this picture when I get home.
