Henry Scherer is the one who rebuilt/refinished my Contax. Don't know if you've ever seen any of his work -- I hadn't, but I knew him by reputation.

About a year ago I saw a Contax IIa he had rebuilt. It was amazingly.

The only other 35mm that could rival it (then) would be the Leica, and I happen to prefer the rangefinder mechanism on the Contax.

I agree. The Contax has a combined rangefinder patch and window, which is much nice that the squinty double window on the LTM Leicas. I have a Leica IIIc and mostly use hyperscale focusing with it.

The Leica shutter is rubberized cloth, and it is possible to burn a hole in it if you leave the camera out pointing directly in the sun, at the proper angle and at the correct stop, for a long enough period of time. Same effect as a magnifying glass. But in all my years of shooting, I have only ever seen one person manage to do this.

I've seen plenty of burns in vintage & modern leicas. Including shutters that developed mold.

but I prefer the body's size & ergonomics. I have some russian & zeiss lenses that I shoot on the leicas. So for me its th best of both worlds. Tho the ContaxII was undoubtedly a fine camera.

My job's firewall now stupidly blocks anything with "photo" in it, so I can't offer as much as I'd like - most of my old camera links don't work from here now. Anyway...

Start here:

http://cameraquest.com/argc3let.htm

And check out that Argus Collector's link at the bottom. There's plenty of info out there on these old classics, and some very knowledgeable folks.

Thank you Doctor Strange. That site had some but not too much in depth. I have one that nobody else has! My shutter button is differently shaped than everyone I have seen.Hhhmmm... oh well.[huh]

Sam: Here is a little history on the Argus C3.

Aaand here is the instruction manual you requested. At least for a C3 like mine. :)

Enjoy your camera. (I have two of them - both the same as the one in the top picture on the Wiki site. One was my father's.)

Can you provide a picture of yours?

I've got an Argus "A", a C-3, and a C-4, also a brownie, and a Yashica LM (tlr). I used to use the C-3 quite a lot in my photography, before I purchased a Cannon A-1 which was stolen out of my apartment. :rage: If I remember correctly, my C-3 has the holes on the side for the flash.
Have also had a Rolleiflex TLR in the past, wish I still had it.

Ask and you shall receive! This is not the best shot but it will work for now. I could'nt keep the flach from reflecting off the chrome. Oh well!

I finally got around to taking a few pics of my yard sale find from last year. It's a Yashica LM (light meter). I paid what they were asking without trying to haggle, a whole $10.00.

Mark Hermann, fancy seeing you here mate! Anyway I thought I'd add that this is my first post her, and voila, a thread on something I was frantically looking for. I also recently purchased an Argus C3, with a serial number dating it to its first year of production in 38'. I also have the same brownie as mark, as well as a Kodak No. 1 collapsable. Thanks for all the info on this thread folks, I really appreciate it.
