Born in Detroit, raised in Bloomfield Hills and graduated from U of M in Ann Arbor.

And having a lot of fun yesterday through Friday giving an architecture tour of Palm Springs to a bunch of architecture graduate students from Cranbrook.

I'm in Canton Twp.. I used to shop at Hughes and Hatcher back in the '70s,along with Capper and Capper,both in Detroit and AA. Van Boven was another good clothes store,now long gone. I was a tie fanatic back then,and spent many a lunch hour downtown prowling these stores,along with the big Hudson's on Woodward,looking for just the right tie.

I remember the ties at Capper-on Grand Circus either in the David Whitney or next door- Van Boven still exists in Ann Arbor-too Euro oriented now!(I am trying to be civil)
you could make a day of it 20+ years ago downtown- hit Brooks Bros in the Penobscot, Capper and or Hudsons-I think Capper was Chicago based co. -if memory serves they briefly landed in
Somerset mall-bought bow tie there- it sure wasnt the same as shopping downtown.- enjoyed your post and revisiting my sartorial past!!

At the time, just out of college, I worked in the David Whitney bldg., when it still housed a large number of doctors.(I was a med. Tech. back then). Capper and Capper was down in the lobby. I used to do just as you said-go over to Brooks Bros. in the truely fantastic Penobscot, buy a tie or two, then go over to Hudsons to peruse their selection of Countess Mara ties.
I didn't even realize that Van Boven is still around-Back when they were Traditional,I went to their store in AA in the nickles (sp?) arcade-I haven-t been to that part of AA in many years,even though I only live over in Canton-my taste in clothes has shifted more over to Filson and Pendleton now.

They may well have a Brooks in the Ren Cen now (i fear) similar to their quasi Euro modernistique versions in airports- the Penobscot Bldg Brooks had thatlook you see in pre war photos.
Curious to see the restoration of the Book Cadillac-unrivaled in the day.glad to hear from my fellow Detroiters!

Hmm, this looks like a good place to do a belated introduction. I too am a Michigander, and proud of it! I was born in Alpena, grew up in Whitehall, went to school in Mount Pleasant and now live in Muskegon while attending law school in Grand Rapids. I've also lived in Lansing, Kalamazoo and Galesburg.

I've been a fedora wearer since elementary school - although I went through a "mainstream" phase in undergrad. I'm interested in architecture, historic preservation (I'm on the MHPN easement committee), downtowns, old cars, vintage electronics and probably other things I'm forgetting right now.

Well, see you around the board.

Dave, glad to see you found us. Welcome to the Lounge! It always great to see another Michigander here.

You live and work quite close to me - I live in Allendale. We'll have to try to get together sometime down the road. There are a few other Loungers from the Grand Rapids area so maybe we can meet up for dinner and drinks (or better yet have a Michigan Lounger Event with everyone from across the state).

Grew up in "Taylor-tucky".

Attended Wayne State in '78 (played in WSU's marching band on Thanksgiving Day that year - Lions and Bears if I remember correctly).

Reversed the 'great exodus' from the '50s and '60s.

Just to let those who may not know know, there are dance classes taught the second Saturday of each month at the Pittsfield Grange Hall in Ann Arbor by a dance historian that teaches social dances from various eras. They usually have two big events per year, one set in the 19th Century and one in the early 20th. The next is set for Saturday, February 9 from 8pm-11pm and is called the Valentine's Ragtime Trot, with pre-ball workshops preceding it. Vintage dress is encouraged and these events are great fun (unfortunately I will be out of town for this one). Here is a link to their website.

In addition, they have Second Saturday Swing with an instructor and DJ providing the best of swing. If that isn't enough, there is an outstanding swing band performing in Ann Arbor at the Firefly Lounge every Sunday from 5pm-8pm called Phil Ogilvie's Rhythm Kings, they are outstanding, among their members are U of M Music Professors. While not officially a Michigan person I am in Fort Wayne Indiana. Which is about 45-60 minutes from the border. If anyone ever is traveling here I can give you pointers on some good vintage spots.

Small world. I grew up in Whitehall but probably a few years before you did. My father still lives there and I visit often from my current home in Ohio. I have lots of family and friend connections in Muskegon, G.R., Lansing, and other parts of the state.

Hello There Ladies and gents, I'm a long time lurker of the forum and Its really nice to see so many like minded people from Michigan who come to the forum so frequently. I'm 18 from Dearborn heights just out of high school. I'm going to school in Philadelphia, but I still consider Michigan to be home. I'm from "up north," as you Detroit and Grand Rapids residents refer to it.
