Burned on Ebay

Hi all, just wanted to report a bad experience on ebay and hear your thoughts. I pulled the trigger on a Real McCoy's Roughwear 27752 this week in russet goatskin. The seller included a number of pics that showed the jacket to be in a fairly well used condition but appearing to have a nice patina and no major flaws. The only wear and tear mentioned in the description was around the collar. Quote from the advert:

WORN WELL WITH AMAZING PATINA AND IT HAS BEEN SAID, GETTING HARD TO DISTINGUISH FROM AN ORIGINAL ROUGHWEAR.

THE CUFFS AND WAISTBAND ARE IN GOOD CONDITION AND THE TRIPLE TALON 1940's VERSION TYPE ZIPPER WORKS WELL.

THE INSIDE OF THE COLLAR SHOWS WEAR AS CAN BE SEEN IN THE PICTURES ALTHOUGH THIS IS NOT DETRIMENTAL TO WEARING IT AND DOES ADD TO THAT WAR TIME LOOK.

Fine I thought, I can live with a bit of wear around the collar and the leather looks good so I'll go for it. I paid £380.

When it arrived I immediately saw that the there were places where the stitching had worn away and disappeared completely. The right hand pocket has the worst of it. There's 2 inches missing from one of the vertical seams and 1 inch missing from the bottom seam. On the left pocket there's 2 areas with 2 or 3 stitches missing. On one of the sleeves there's an inch missing. I think this should have been mentioned in the description as especially on the pockets its only going to get worse and compromise the functionality of the jacket.

A further concern is that there's a small white label sewn into the lining that says 'REAL LEATHER cleaning entrust to specialist leather cleaner'.

I thought Real Mccoy's jackets were made in Japan or New Zealand.

I have been in touch with the seller to describe the stitching issue and say I want to return but he refuses:

I am pleased you received the jacket promptly
The jacket is not described as brand new. It is a used worn jacket. The pictures listed clearly showed the jacket in a used format and your comment about serious flaws is incorrect.
As stated the jacket was a firm sale with no returns and the description and the photos in the sale clearly show the jacket correctly.
Wearers of repro flying jackets in my experience are looking for a vintage worn look which this jacket offers rather than new.

Is it acceptable to sell a used jacket and not mention the issues I've described? Any thought's appreciated!

Have you taken the dispute to Ebay? The few times I have needed they were great at resolving the issue. Sellers with integrity don't want to risk their ratings.

As above If you open a dispute with ebay, explain things as well and clearly as you have here and include some photographs they will, in my experience, normally force the seller to accept a return/refund, and sometimes to also pay for the return postage. Its a step by step process, the seller will have something like 7 days to reply and then if they don't respond you can ask eBay to make a decision. They tend to be weighted to come down on the buyers side so if it wasn't as described you should be okay.

(I've had two occasions from the other side of things as a seller, I would say I suffered with unscrupulous buyers on those occasions but ultimately I got my items back and then sold them to people who were very happy with them so it, eventually, worked out.)

Sad to read this.
I saw an auction for this jacket, at first I thought about buying it for myself, but for me it was small and after my colleague wanted to buy it . However, he stopped the lack lining pics. He wrote to the seller and got the answer that the lining is OK but the seller did not show the photo lining.
I think you need to open a dispute, describing the situation in detail.

That does not seem correct. Real Mc Coys have an makers label when you lift a pocket. Hopefully more McCoy folks will chime in. Seems odd to have their jacket with stitch issues.

Post the sale ad or pictures of the jacket

I would take the time to establish whether it is really a McCoys jacket...the stiitching may be a minor issue if the jacket is a fake. If it is a McCoys and you love it, it fits, and it is only the stitching that is the issue perhaps find a tailor to fix it. It may be an inexpensive fix and in the long run, although it does not let the unscrupulous seller off the hook, may be the path of less stress.

Thanks for the replies and advice, I am considering opening up a dispute. Before I do I'm interested to know if this made in UK label indicates the jacket is not an authentic Real McCoy's as I think this would strengthen the case. If it is genuine I'm very surprised that the stitching has disintegrated in several places - I know that Aero has a lifetime guarantee on stitching, so presumably they don't expect it to fail. Would have the thought the stitching on a Real McCoy's would have been of comparable durability.

Hi

Just saw this. As I was the seller I thought I should reply.

I am very disappointed that the buyer is unhappy with the purchase but the text and the pictures were the full description as stated and clearly define the jacket correctly for a purchaser to make an accurate buying decision.

The jacket was purchased off another forum member here and is a genuine jacket.

I should add that it does have the Real McCoy’s pocket label and this was pictured in the listing.

I showed a wide variety of pictures (12) to show the jacket front back top bottom arms collar pockets etc etc to aid the potential buyer including a crop picture showing both pockets detailing the slight areas of wear etc of the stitches.

Where I could I replied to any message on the listing and did email several folks additional images when asked.

This was not listed as a brand new jacket and as such there will always be small marks and areas etc that are less than perfect.

Indeed often we are in A2 jackets looking for a more distressed 1942 look in a box. As for the comment above that the small areas of stitches missing, shown in the pictures on the listing, is making the jacket pockets unfunctionable is well laughable.

I have bought and sold many jackets on this and other forums and eBay etc and have never had an issue with another purchaser.

As stated I am deeply saddened that the buyer is unhappy but also that this seller can it seems be be accused of burning someone when perhaps this is a case of buyer remorse.

I would habr it repaired. It is gorgeous and if it fits you enjoy the hell out of it. Perhaps Alan would consider splitting that cost? I wouldn't imagine it being that costly.

Well you paid £380 for a jacket that new is £1745. I wouldn’t expect it to be like new with just a bit of patina. I think you should get the stitching repaired if is such a big deal. Difficult to tell from the pictures in the listing.

Hi Mich, I didn't expect it to be like new with just a it of patina, but there again I didn't expect it to be coming apart at the seams either. Also I'm not sure it is a genuine Real McCoy's the made in the UK label seems ominous. The jacket is too small on me anyway so I'll have to move it on one way or another, preferably returning it to the sender.

someone must know if this is a genuine RM's? If it is I would be tempted to keep it...

otherwise "NO RETURNS EXCEPTED." is your get-out.

It's a beautiful jacket. But yeah, I understand it bothers you but if you really can't live with it, I think you could turn the whole deal into a profit. List it for more and just make sure to describe everything that's wrong with it. These jackets are really popular these days and even at I dunno, £500 it's still a bargain.

"No return" doesn't exist, just open a dispute with eBay, not as described, posting pictures of the damage and stating what you said in your first post.
You will get a prepaid return label and a refund.
