Thanks.

I only stopped at a steep hill
with my 1939 Ford.
Once.

Hand brakes and quick maneuvering of clutch &
gas pedal got me out of this
situation.

But now I know which roads to
avoid.
Should have bought a Dodge with Fluid Drive! Just let off the clutch, ease your left foot onto the brake, then give a little gas while letting off the brake and away you go! Easy peasy lemon squeezy! :)

On a steep hill.
My left foot is on the clutch.
Right is on the brake pedal.
The moment I ease off the clutch, I need to give it gas
otherwise the motor will skip and die.
And, the moment I move the right foot from the brake pedal,
the truck will go backwards.
It’s not like my SUV that stays put.

Here’s what I do.
At first gear.
With the emergency brakes on.
I move my right foot from the brake pedal
to the gas pedal, give it gas and also
ease off on the clutch with my left foot and
at the same time release the hand brakes.

If I’m quick, the truck will not go backwards too much.

You just gave a wonderful explanation of one of the great intrinsic (and experienced that way) joys of driving a stick. You actually feel like you are driving the car and not playing a video game like in an automatic.

My very first truck ('38)
was equipped with a hand throttle.

If I'm not mistaken, I recall that
I could maneuver the truck without having to shift gears
by use of the hand throtle.
Almost like driving an automatic.

But then, I was missing out on
the joy of "driving a stick" as
you pointed out.

One other thing I love about the
truck is the grand sound of the horn.

Unlike today's "road-runner"
beep-beep horns . ;)

Although they have their advantages, I'll be happy with an automatic. On our trips to Europe and the U.K., however, I wound up with a six-speed manual both times. And one of them had right-hand drive. The first hundred yards was a little awkward.

One thing I found out when driving from coast to coast.

You don't want to drive a vehicle
with hanging pedals as opposed
to floor pedals.
My right foot developed cramps
half way on the trip.

At the half way point on the trip.
I taped a flat board that made it possible to rest my foot on the floor and still be able to apply gas.

This was the case with a VW car
known as the "Rabbit".

Also helps if the vehicle has
a "car" frame and not a "truck"
frame.

A car with a truck frame may
cost less, but the ride is not as
comfortable.
Something that car dealers might
not mention.

The way it was explained to me was, the most comfortable position was with your foot flat on the floor (gas pedal all the way in).

That's not a bumper.

This is a bumper...

It's almost smiling, isn't it? But I don't think I've ever seen a bumper sticker on a front bumper.

Sometimes I will see a vehicle with the entire back plastered with stickers proclaiming for all and sundry their beliefs. Mostly, however, I just conclude that they believe in bumper stickers.

I've never understood the attraction of bumper stickers. You spend thousands of dollars on a vehicle, only to plaster it with "funny" stickers or social or political statements?

I've also forbidden dealers from placing or installing their logos on my two new car purchases. They can pay for their own advertising.

In the UK, the dealer's name appears on the license plate.

In Canada, plates are issued by and legally belong to the Provincial Crown. Dealers often put frames around the plates with their advertising on it. I'd refuse to have an advert on my plates!

I'll post a pic of one of mine shortly.

A few individuals even dislike the idea of the maker's name on their vehicle, possibly because it is "common." Personally, I think it is something of a cachet to have a certain dealer's name on your car, although I'm sure it's display value would be highly localized.

I've never owned a car with a dealer name on the back. The closest I came was one that had A523X written on the trunk lid in yellow grease pencil from the salvage yard I bought it from. It stayed on there the whole eleven years I owned the car.

I'm sure you are much nicer in person that how you sometimes come across here, although I'm not quite willing to bet money on it. But chances are, you are even more interesting in person, unlike myself.
