Tucked behind the sweatband of one of my vintage hats I found part of a newspaper that had been torn and folded down to use as a sweatband shim. The paper was the Minneapolis Sunday Tribune dated Nov. 1, 1953.

Brown's Bon-Art Clothes had an advertisement for their Expansion Sale. Here's a couple of of items from the ad:

Note that wool sport coats were on sale for $17!

The news articles were interesting, too. Here's one to put things into perspective:

French Beat Off Fourth Ambush in Jungle War

HANOI, INDOCHINA--(AP)--
French and Vietnamese troops Saturday beat off the fourth Viet Minh jungle ambush, a French high command spokesman announced.

No figures on either rebel or French Union losses were available. French planes helped their armored infrantry column, ambushed while on a raid southwest of Phu Nho Quan.

The French are seeking to draw the Viet Minh into a battle of divisional strength, but the rebels appear content with smaller ambush attacks.

Little did the readers of the time know that little article was a preview of things to come for the US. Not trying to make this into a political thing, I just find such things interesting. On the opposing page is another small article noting that the Army was to release 1,100 more reserve officers, in addition to the 2,000 that went out in early October. These would have been part of a drawdown following the Korean Conflict's cease-fire earlier in the year.

Regards,
Tom

Interesting find, Tom. Thanks for posting.

Those $60 - $65 suits in 1953 would cost about $500 today.

Yeah it's the battle called Dien Bien Phu and was one of the worst battles that the French lost in their military history and a sign of things to come in Algeria. It was similar to Stalingrad when they thought airpower and resupply would save an encircled force. Thanks for the fascinating article.:eusa_clap

I would happily pay 500 for a suit of that cut and quality.

I would as well. The pants prices are about $115 (when not on sale). Very similar pricing to today when adjusted for inflation.
