Yeah, the Brown's Beach vests are hit and miss. Sometimes they'll sell for a lot and, like most recently, have been selling for a couple bills - can't understand it.

Cushman, Drybones and Freewhellers are all Japanese company's that have reproduced the vests and jackets - both good and bad.

Check out this A-W-E-S-O-M-E interpretation one from Freewheelers. For $700, it's oh so tempting!!!

The trouble with the Japanese repros is that the Japanese buy stuff because it's high price. They like to flaunt the pricetag as well as the style and function, so all the garment prices are ridiculously high compared to comparable quality over here. They'll keep paying 7 bills for it as a point of pride. The costs are about the same as what you paid back in the day (adjusted for inflation of course), but the pricetag is much higher becuase people over there are willing (and want) to pay it.

The US is not immune to those influences, we just have the disease to a lesser extent. Unless we're talking about watches. In that case, we have it to a far worse extent.

I read somewhere that everyone who lives in Japan is employed and very successful as doctors, lawyers and/or executives.

Well, seeing as a used original with flaws sells for about the same, it is definitely tempting. Especially with the shawl collar since an original was never produced with one (at least not that I've seen).

It's interesting to know that the cap is a repop seeing as I thought it was just a Japanese interpretation.

All kidding aside, I would be very wary of any Japanese-made or intended items that are cold weather items. They are so specific in cut, details, material used and yet... they skimp when it comes to making the items warm wearing, as the originals would have been. I would need to see the repro jackets in person before even considering buying another one. That being said, if you live in a warm weather climate, like Southern California, these are for you!
