I recently purchased a brown scarf for this very reason. The scarf also has some black in it which I think makes it work a bit better. The coat is charcoal colored wool and the hat is a very dark brown 40s Royal Stetson.

Viper Man,
The hat and scarf look great with that coat.

Well, the Nostalgia does come in brown...;)
Honestly, I'll probably go with a Akubra Fed w/ an Indy bash when I eventually get a brown one. I finally bought The Sting Special Edition DVD, and I'm still obsessed with owning a grey hat next.

My winter coat is also black and I wear a dark brown hat with it that is definitely passable. I can't for the life of me find a brown wool dress coat around here anyway. As has been posted above, wearing something else brown is the key, or in the genius insight simply match a scarf.

I had a nice JW hat a few years ago in chocolate brown (I have since passed it to my son), but I used to occasionally wear it with my black overcoat. I always thought a black or grey would look more correct, but I tend to be narrow in my thinking when it comes to colors. My wife thought it looked nice, and she's very color savvy. I now have my steel grey hat, which I pair with my black overcoat. When I wear my brown Barnstormer coat, I don a brown hat. But I agree with the other posters, they work well if you tie them together some other way.
