Brooks that needs repair to lining - worth it or not?

Yessiree , that's the man !

I'm still unsure as to how to attach links and photos on the site myself ( or even if I can yet ?)

And yes , some of the jackets he has on his list have a very strong resemblance to my original 1990 Eastman Fliegerjacke Luftwaffe

Why not , "imitation being the sincerest form of flattery" and all...

What was the work you had done like? Did they reuse the original stitch holes for the jacket, would you have known the lining had even been replaced? I'm very OCD if it's not perfect ( within reason ) it would ruin the jacket for me.

Thuggee, you'd want to ring and discuss his methods in person. Just because he used the original stitch holes in a jacket repaired some time ago doesn't mean he will do it again. I learned that the hard way by experience.

My 1990 Eastman you would not know it had been relined. Now I can't remember the exact cost 12+ years ago ( early onset Alzheimers and all that !)

BUT it was worth it at the time ,and getting a "new" copy made at the same time may have helped. I still wear both today occasionally

Just thought I would bump this thread, I was after a jacket to be relined so reached out to Sinnikka leather after some postive feedback I found in this thread, they are relining a Areomarine for me, I should have it back in around a week so will report back on the experience if there is any interest, so far its been all positive.

Thanks for the info....how much are they charging and what is the lining they are using? Would love to see some pics and your thoughts when you get it back.

I was quoted around AU$200 plus shipping back which I felt was reasonable, TAT is around 1-2weeks, I'm replacing a wool lining/sleeves with a light weight cotton drill, pics and thoughts to follow when it's back in my hands

Why is it difficult to be involved with leather in Australia? Just a lack of product and services so you have to go overseas making it more expensive?

I would not bother relining a Brooks just because they aren't very expensive in the first place. You could probably buy a used one off eBay for the cost of relining.

Well, it's partly the loss of small businesses in Australia under decades of economic policies that eroded manufacturing - most small leatherwear companies I knew 30 years ago have gone. It's also partly the fact that very few people wear leather down here, we have a small population, mainly spread around the coast and a huge land mass. The demand for leather re-lining is tiny.

I would reline the Brooks if it were a very good one. You'll then have a great vintage jacket with lining for another 10-20 years. Brooks linings tend to tear up fairly quick anyway, even if they look ok when you get them. Not sure that polyester fabric is all that robust.

While the USA has over 300 million people, Australia with virtually the same land area as the US has only 23 million so economies of scale are involved.

Also, until more recently , due to our relative geographic isolation, almost any retail item was (and still does) costs significantly more here as almost any importer had a virtual monopoly.

Australian retail is still struggling to come to terms with internet shopping and the easy availability of much cheaper overseas availability.

Everyone here Half jokes about the Australia Tax. People are so used to paying high prices, companies just charge more because historically they can.

I've worked in industries recently where a customer could order an item and have it shipped here from Canada for less than I could sell it to the store owner at wholesale prices.

Just got my jacket back from Nicholas of Sinnikka leather, was a easy painless transaction took around 2-3 weeks all up intial contact by email then a couple of phone calls to discuss the lining options/process, my Areomarine originally had a tartan style wool lining, I had Nic reline the jacket with a light weight brown cotton drill better suited for my part of the world, sleeves brown polyester, couldn't be happier with the end result looks great and now makes the jacket much more wearable , if you said the lining was original to the jacket I wouldn't question it & don't think Areo would have done any better if I had sent it back to be relined , I wouldn't hesitate using Nic or recommending his company he certainly knows what he's doing, all up cost me AU$220 which included materials and shipping back to me, couple of pics cheers.
